About the Author
Roy S. Freedman founded Inductive Solutions, Inc., in 1989. His primary consulting and research interests involve the practical application of mathematics, statistics, and computer technology to risk management problems in trading, operations, and compliance. He is also Adjunct Associate Professor of Financial Engineering at Polytechnic University where he teaches courses on financial technology, operational risk, technology management, and quantitative methods.

Dr. Freedman has written over 60 published papers, two books, and six book chapters. He is the author of "Artificial Intelligence On Wall Street" that appears in the Encyclopedia of Computer Science and Technology (Volume 28) and is the primary editor of Artificial Intelligence in the Capital Markets: State-Of-The-Art Applications for Institutional Investors, Bankers & Traders. Dr. Freedman has been involved in assignments for the New York Stock Exchange, Merrill Lynch, Robertson Stephens, Banco Santander, Meridian Investment Company, Sun Microsystems, Tamiso & Company, Time-Warner, Chemical Bank, The Equitable, Loral, Grumman, and many other institutions.

Prior to his work at Inductive Solutions, Inc., Dr. Freedman was Associate Professor of Computer Science at Polytechnic University.

Dr. Freedman's professional activities include serving as editor and reviewer for several publications and being an invited speaker and teacher at many conferences and seminars. He was the Program Chairman for the first, second, and third International Conference on Artificial Intelligence Applications on Wall Street.

Dr. Freedman received a BS and MS in Mathematics, an MS in Electrical Engineering, and a Ph.D. in Mathematics, all from Polytechnic University in New York City. He is a member of the AAAI, ACM, GARP, IEEE, SIAM, and SQA.

not great on kindle

The book's content is great. The explanation of mathematical concepts with examples and history blew my mind on several occasions.

However, the Kindle version was pretty awful. Many of the equations didn't show up correctly and also many don't resize correctly when the font is resized. Of course charts and graphs are hard to view on a small kindle screen but the equations were sometimes unreadable.

If the equations showed up correctly I'd give this book 5 stars. If I were solely rating the kindle version I'd probably give it only one star.

Lots of history, lots of finance, very little technology

As a technical architect in a non financial field (telecoms) I bought this hoping it would do what is said, and introduce me to financial technology (in my mind, and in the publishers reviews, this implied aspects of technology, and technology domain knowledge specific to the finance industry)

Instead, I'm 6 chapters in, I've read page after page of financial formulas, I've digested the roughly 40% of the book that is recounting historical footnotes to finance (history of the chappe telegraph? intellectual property disputes about morse code), and waded through irrelevant diversions in fields such as "Combining voltage and current sources".

While all this is interesting enough, if I wanted to SO much about the details of financial calculations I would have bought a book "Financial Formulas". If I wanted to know SO much about history, then I would have bought a book called "History of Financial Technology". As it is, I bought a book called "Financial Technology" and I've learnt very little so far about it.

The concept of vulnerability was first presented in Chapter 1 and defined as a measure of the propensity of an object, area, individual, group, community, country, or other entity to incur the consequences of a hazard. As this section illustrates, measurement of vulnerability results from a combination of physical, social, economic, and environmental factors or processes. These factors are the primary determinant features that dictate how the likelihood and/or consequences components of risk are increased or decreased.

It is important to first clarify the difference between the concepts of vulnerability and exposure, which are often confused. The two words are used interchangeably to describe how a country, region, or community is likely to experience a certain hazard. However, this is incorrect, as the discussion on vulnerability factors shows. The United Nation’s risk reduction document Living with Risk embodies this concept, saying, “While most natural hazards may be inevitable, disasters are not” (ISDR, 2004).

While vulnerability defines the propensity to incur consequences, exposure merely suggests that the individual, structure, community, nation, or other subject will be exposed to the hazard. For instance, one might say, “The Spanish are vulnerable to drought,” meaning that Spain regularly experiences the drought hazard. But this statement implies more than the speaker intended. The use of the word “vulnerable” implies that the population is likely to incur negative consequences as a result of factors that make it less likely to protect its citizens and built and natural environments from harm, not simply that drought happens there. The reality, as Figures 3–9 and 3–10 illustrate, is that while Spain is regularly exposed to drought, the nation is not vulnerable to its consequences.

Indispensable if you are serious about learning the language

If you have just started learning Greek and you think there is an easy way to master it, you should better stop fantasising. This book will never try to convince you that there is such a way. It would not be honest.

That is why you will find lots of grammar here. You will need it. You will appreciate later how clearly the material is presented, especially the notorious irregular verbs. Even after completing this book you will use it as a reference tool. This is one of the reasons why the book is such a good buy.

Another strong point of this book are exercises. They are very well planned and designed to achieve one single aim: to develop proper language structures in your brain. Important hint however: do not buy "The Introduction..." without the answer book. The exercises are not easy and you will need a confirmation that you are doing them properly.

One tiny little drawback. The editor's work could have been done better. It is generally good practice in editing books to use different sorts of type, like bold-faced one. Another idea, which is also not entirely bad (and one could expect that it should be understood by editors worldwide), is to organise the text into clear paragraphs instead of gathering it into big lumps which are not only difficult to read but also will destroy any attempt to find an information quickly. I hope this will be corrected in future editions.

A quality language text -- Wish there were more like it

As a linguist with a fair amount of experience in Asian languages (Mandarin and Classical/Literary Chinese), I was interested in approaching a language of a completely different nature: Attic Greek. After reading through a number of other reviews, I settled on this book and have been thrilled with my purchase ever since. Mastronarde gets the basic idea that vocabulary you can't effectively use (i.e. words for which you don't understand the associated grammar) is worthless and takes all the necessary precautions to make sure that by the time you learn a new term you know how it's used. The negative reviews I've seen for this book mainly have to do with it's grammar-centric composition (which is viewed as being slow to develop), but if you're going to learn a language with the aim to enjoy it for the rest of your life, why complain about using a text that'll be a little slower in the first two weeks but ultimately leave you with superior understanding?

This is a marvelous book, but I highly recommend purchasing Introduction to Attic Greek ANSWER BOOK as well. Morice's Stories in Attic Greek is another goodie as it allows you to see the language in action once you've covered the basics of declension and conjugation and provides some of the cultural knowledge necessary to fully engage an original text.

Self-study Standout

Along with its answer key (ISBN 0520201779)-- and its Electronic Workbook (ISBN 05202813) this text is particularly valuable for those of us mad enough to slog Ancient Greek on our own. One of its primary strengths lies in the clarity of its description of grammar. Mastronarde doesn't assume that you KNOW what a preposition is or a pronoun either for that matter. He provides very thorough and clear descriptions at every stage. And something you rarely see in this kind of text, he will suggest that you return to a particularly difficult stretch after moving on a few chapters--accentuation, for example. Great! He knows that some of us are human and older. Sometimes both. Also recommend the JACT (Joint Association of Classical Teachers) series--three books.

Another Cussler home run!

This book has all the twists and turns of a typical Clive Cussler Adventure and the fanciful plots and plans made on the spur of the moment somehow end up in success. It is a fast action thriller from beginning to the very end.

Interesting twists

I really enjoy his books and this one was fairly interesting. It had several plot lines but I thought it would've been better had they given more story to the lost cargo ship found in the desert at the end since it was just an intricate part of the story in the beginning and all of a sudden at the end they just almost as an afterthought have found the ship on land when up to the discovery everyone still thought the ship was out at sea. Then boom here they are on land miles away from the sea and there's no story to finding it. Just oh we kinda figured it and here's your ship and missing diamonds lost forever with no trace but hey we got them balm!

A good story with good characters

I like the Oregon Series and the characters. Its a sense of teamwork and parts operating as a whole that makes this series a little different for me. The problems they get into and the solutions they just use are quite interesting and, of course there is the boat itself which is as much a character and part of the team as anyone else although silent. It's amazing what can be accomplished with an unlimited budget. I enjoyed the trip.

Most helpful and insightful

The book is fairly comprehensive in terms of its scope. We are currently using the book at our Organizational Behavior class, and it's proved to be an excellent reference. The way it is structured (for the reader) makes in-depth reading or skimming through it (let's face it: this is the reality for most working MBA students!) equally effective. It has clearly distinguishable definitions on the margins, which can serve as a cue for the topic, along with the summaries at the end of every chapter. The intro and closing "cases" provided around the topic of the chapter are VERY insightful and on every other page or so, there are examples about the matter being discussed, which help with the understanding (I know that I, as an Engineer, appreciate examples to illustrate a point). Finally, the illustrations (graphs and charts) are one of the best things the book has! Remember that phrase that used to say "a picture is worth a thousand words"? Well, the authors epithomize it. The charts in the book do a great job at conveying entire pages of information at a time in a very efficient way. All in all, I like the book a lot, and it's been very helpful in complementing our in-class discussions about cases and topics of Organizational Behavior.

Business or Psychology - Good real-life cases, situations

Good for its scope of coverage in organizational behavior. I used the book on a course for Organizatinoal Psychology. It can be used for a business course or psychology. While there is so much theory, that perhaps the average manager might not use, there is a lot of food for thought here in helping any leader of a major organization, or mid-size organization, in being competitive in this competitive society, and managing effectively his or her department or company, as a strong individual leader, or wherever you might fit into the big wheel.

I was somewhat inspired by the information and examples in this book. I sold some of my college textbooks, but kept this one along with some others. Well-written and through.
