This is the second edition of a companion handbook to Principles and Practice of Gynecologic Oncology, 6th edition, Barakat et al., with an emphasis on summary information, key points, and treatment algorithms.�

This is an excellent quick resource and introduction to gynecologic oncology.�The summary and key points are extremely valuable and the references are high yield. The tables that summarize landmark studies are extremely helpful and the use of figures to show survival curves is a key feature.�The handbook covers key topics from the parent textbook, organized by chapters covering each of the major cancer sites: cervix, vulva, vagina, uterus, ovary, and fallopian tube. Individual chapters are dedicated to chemotherapy, radiation, preinvasive lesions, and gestational trophoblastic neoplasms.�The purpose is to provide an introduction to the basics of oncology practice and the latest advances in the field of gynecologic oncology. The handbook emphasizes introductory and summary information on major cancer sites. The 'real' story

There are those who believe, or perhaps I should say, 'believe', that Sherlock Holmes was (or, sometimes, is) a real historical figure. In this magnificent biography of the great detective, William S. Baring-Gould wrote that none of the characters in his book are fictional, 'although the author should very much like to meet any who claim to be.'

William S. Baring-Gould (1913-1967) was one of the greatest Sherlock Holmes scholars ever. Publishing several works on Holmes publically and privately, this biography was published in 1962, a few years before his great, two-volume annotated edition of the canon of Sherlock Holmes, which still remains a standard bearer. Baring-Gould himself was a life-long devotee of Holmes in particular, and mysteries in general. He is also noted for the fictional biography of Nero Wolfe, which continues the idea presented in this volume that Nero is the son of Holmes and THE woman, Irene Adler, of 'A Scandal in Bohemia' fame.

Sherlock Holmes is one of the best known detectives in the world -- so famous in fact, that 221B Baker Street in London continues to get mail adddressed to this fictional character almost a century after he would have died had he been a real person. There are groups of people -- Sherlockians and Holmesians, the distinction between which is rather subtle -- who delight in retelling the tales. There are forever questions and debates about the ordering of the stories; Baring-Gould is one authority often referred to in these debates, thanks to his work on the Chronology of Holmes, used as an organising principle behind this book.

Baring-Gould draws on the canonical texts and some clever speculations and deductions to piece together a rather complete biographical sketch. As almost every major Sherlock Holmes scholar does, Baring-Gould fills in the gaps in the data. He postulates the birth, childhood and education of Holmes, which is never made explicit in the text of the stores. His idea for Irene Adler as Holmes' lifelong love is not original, but his development of the affair, including the outcome of the son (Nero Wolfe) with the familial characteristics similar to both Mycroft and Sherlock Holmes is ingenious.

Baring-Gould develops details about Watson and Conan Doyle, too, but the primary emphasis here is on Holmes. Baring-Gould argued strongly (some would say convincingly) that this is not a work of fiction. His research was very exacting -- the biography includes two appendices, one of which is a chronology (Baring-Gould had a private published chronology of Holmes) of Holmes' life, according to Baring-Gould (a generation of scholars have debated its merits, but none have ignored it), and a second appendix is a select bibliography, now out of date somewhat, but a great list showing the major works of the first generation of Sherlock Holmes scholars.

Every Sherlockian/Holmesian will want to read this book. It is fascinating for those who love the stories, well written and authoritative.

The real biography of the world greatest detective

Baring-Gould is the greatest chronicler of the Holmesian canon. His annotated version is a must for every enthusiast. Sherlock Holmes of Baker Street is the biography of the man, put together from the many stories. "It was the year in which Henry David Thoreau wrote Walden...."."Unaccountably, the Almanac fails to list perhaps the most memorable event of that same memorable year. It was the birth, in the early hours of the morning of Friday, January 6, of a third and last son to Siger and Violet Holmes, at the farmstead of Mycroft in the North Riding of Yorkshire, England, a district famous for its horse-breeding stables and its wind-swept--"wuthering" - heights." You will read about the birth of the man, his family, his brother, etc. You will enter with him into his friendship with Watson (also Watson's youth) and their adventures. Please bring this book back in print. It is a must.

Wonderfully speculative!

I first read Baring-Gould's biography back in 1975, and it was my first REAL exposure to The Game -- the treatment of Sherlock Holmes as a living person and the art of speculating about The Master's life from the clues dropped by Watson in the original stories. I'm delighted that this book is still available.
Baring-Gould presents as good a chronology of the Doyle tales as anyone, and he "fills in the blanks" delightfully. (Imagine Holmes fighting a prehistoric bird in hand-to-talon combat on the deck of a freighter! It's true!!)
Baring-Gould obviously had a damn good time writing this extraordinary, and definitive, biography of Sherlock. And if you've already devoured the original 60 stories, dive into this book. Then set it alongside your copies of the Doyle books. It deserves a place there.

About the Author
Roy S. Freedman founded Inductive Solutions, Inc., in 1989. His primary consulting and research interests involve the practical application of mathematics, statistics, and computer technology to risk management problems in trading, operations, and compliance. He is also Adjunct Associate Professor of Financial Engineering at Polytechnic University where he teaches courses on financial technology, operational risk, technology management, and quantitative methods.

Dr. Freedman has written over 60 published papers, two books, and six book chapters. He is the author of "Artificial Intelligence On Wall Street" that appears in the Encyclopedia of Computer Science and Technology (Volume 28) and is the primary editor of Artificial Intelligence in the Capital Markets: State-Of-The-Art Applications for Institutional Investors, Bankers & Traders. Dr. Freedman has been involved in assignments for the New York Stock Exchange, Merrill Lynch, Robertson Stephens, Banco Santander, Meridian Investment Company, Sun Microsystems, Tamiso & Company, Time-Warner, Chemical Bank, The Equitable, Loral, Grumman, and many other institutions.

Prior to his work at Inductive Solutions, Inc., Dr. Freedman was Associate Professor of Computer Science at Polytechnic University.

Dr. Freedman's professional activities include serving as editor and reviewer for several publications and being an invited speaker and teacher at many conferences and seminars. He was the Program Chairman for the first, second, and third International Conference on Artificial Intelligence Applications on Wall Street.

Dr. Freedman received a BS and MS in Mathematics, an MS in Electrical Engineering, and a Ph.D. in Mathematics, all from Polytechnic University in New York City. He is a member of the AAAI, ACM, GARP, IEEE, SIAM, and SQA.

not great on kindle

The book's content is great. The explanation of mathematical concepts with examples and history blew my mind on several occasions.

However, the Kindle version was pretty awful. Many of the equations didn't show up correctly and also many don't resize correctly when the font is resized. Of course charts and graphs are hard to view on a small kindle screen but the equations were sometimes unreadable.

If the equations showed up correctly I'd give this book 5 stars. If I were solely rating the kindle version I'd probably give it only one star.

Lots of history, lots of finance, very little technology

As a technical architect in a non financial field (telecoms) I bought this hoping it would do what is said, and introduce me to financial technology (in my mind, and in the publishers reviews, this implied aspects of technology, and technology domain knowledge specific to the finance industry)

Instead, I'm 6 chapters in, I've read page after page of financial formulas, I've digested the roughly 40% of the book that is recounting historical footnotes to finance (history of the chappe telegraph? intellectual property disputes about morse code), and waded through irrelevant diversions in fields such as "Combining voltage and current sources".

While all this is interesting enough, if I wanted to SO much about the details of financial calculations I would have bought a book "Financial Formulas". If I wanted to know SO much about history, then I would have bought a book called "History of Financial Technology". As it is, I bought a book called "Financial Technology" and I've learnt very little so far about it.

The concept of vulnerability was first presented in Chapter 1 and defined as a measure of the propensity of an object, area, individual, group, community, country, or other entity to incur the consequences of a hazard. As this section illustrates, measurement of vulnerability results from a combination of physical, social, economic, and environmental factors or processes. These factors are the primary determinant features that dictate how the likelihood and/or consequences components of risk are increased or decreased.

It is important to first clarify the difference between the concepts of vulnerability and exposure, which are often confused. The two words are used interchangeably to describe how a country, region, or community is likely to experience a certain hazard. However, this is incorrect, as the discussion on vulnerability factors shows. The United Nation’s risk reduction document Living with Risk embodies this concept, saying, “While most natural hazards may be inevitable, disasters are not” (ISDR, 2004).

While vulnerability defines the propensity to incur consequences, exposure merely suggests that the individual, structure, community, nation, or other subject will be exposed to the hazard. For instance, one might say, “The Spanish are vulnerable to drought,” meaning that Spain regularly experiences the drought hazard. But this statement implies more than the speaker intended. The use of the word “vulnerable” implies that the population is likely to incur negative consequences as a result of factors that make it less likely to protect its citizens and built and natural environments from harm, not simply that drought happens there. The reality, as Figures 3–9 and 3–10 illustrate, is that while Spain is regularly exposed to drought, the nation is not vulnerable to its consequences.
