Little Man What Now life in Germany after WW1

This is an excellent book. I read it in 1934 when it was selected as a Book of the Month Club selection. It has contiued to haunt my mind as I watched the rise of the NationalSocialist party rise to power in Germany. It explained the plight of the German psyche after the Treaty of Versailles and the human cost of the repatriation demands creating the human bondage. It was a great lesson learned by the United States and other allies in creating the Marshall plan for the allies former enemies. I was incredulous on learing that Amazon.com was able to provide this most out of date novel. Thankyou.

Hardship and love a time of despair

The story of the life of the little man Johannes Pinneberg and his love in the Weimar Republic (Germany before Hitler). It accurately presents the hardship of people in the worldwide economic crisis in the 30ies. Pinneberg is a salesman who believes himself above the proletarians. He strives for a bourgeois kind of lifestyle. But after marrying his struggle for survival begins with his social decline. Pinneberg learns: you have to work like an animal or you won't work at all. The book is a story about money, hardship and the constant threat of failure. But one thing prevails: love.
The book is one of my all-time favorites. If you don't mind reading books that are literature at the same time I highly recommend it.

Quite good

This novel provides an interesting look at Germany in the years between World War I and II. As I read it and saw got an understanding of the depths of economic depression the country was in, I began to have a better grasp of how Hitler was able to mesmerize the nation and take power -- he spoke in a way that made people think he'd restore their pride and prosperity.
The story itself is fairly basic. I liked how Fallada wrapped the lessons about history and the economic/political situation around the simple tale of a young couple trying to raise a family and survive in the Depression. The characters were a little stereotypical and could have had more depth, but in general they were quite interesting. The pace of the novel was good. The book was a bit long, but Fallada is a good enough writer that it didn't bother me too much. This book is a good read that any history buff will certainly enjoy.

Wow! A well-written math textbook!

I hate math. Always have. Have always had weak math grades. I took the Penn State course, "The Math of Money" because I figured it would at least have practical application. And wouldn't you know it, I never had a lousy professor until at PSU until I took that class. This textbook was my savior! It is extremely well-written, easy to follow, and yes - you can actually use the material daily! I sat through only half an excrutiating lecture that semester, the book guided me through the rest. Got an easy B.

My only complaint is the book has no index, which is inconvenient. Otherwise, amazing.

Great book!

I bought this book for a class I am currently taking for this semester, and we use it quite often. It is a great book and it really prompted me to review the world around me more carefully. This book is very well written and Jason McFaul makes the content interesting. McFaul's writing style is sarcastic but it gets the point across in a succinct manner. I really like this book and will be keeping it even after the semester ends.

Interesting Stories

This book contains really interesting stories and essays with detailed commentary. The book is for a class and explains certain English terminology very well. Easy to read.

My kids have been participating in the Purple Comet Math Meet for the past 4 years. As homeschoolers, finding opportunities where they can work together on a team to solve interesting problems was never an option until the Purple Comet came along. The problems themselves are great preparation for AMC contests and cover a wide variety of topics, however, this book starts training the kids to problem solve at the middle school level and guides them all the way to high school level problem solving. Topics like Number Theory and Combinatorics become accessible to a younger generation while exciting their interest in math. We love having so many of these problems together in one book, especially since we missed the earlier competitions. The authors' experience in problem writing is evident by the elegance of the concepts they introduce. We love this book! --David Cordeiro

About the Author
Dr. Titu Andreescu is an associate professor of mathematics in the Science and Mathematics Education department at the University of Texas at Dallas (UTD). Much of his career has been devoted to competition math, an efficient medium for teaching creative problem-solving for a wide-range of math topics. With over 30 years of experience teaching, coaching, and mentoring the brightest mathematical minds of our age, Dr. Andreescu's books are essential for every math enthusiast's library. Here are just a few highlights from his distinguished career: -Authored, co-authored, and edited more than 40 math books and publications -Head coach and leader of the USA International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) for 8 years -Director of the Mathematical Association of American (MAA) American Mathematics -Competitions for 5 years -Has contributed hundreds of problems to various math competitions including up to and including the IMO -Co-founder of the Purple Comet! Just the book you need to train for math competitions!

More great problems for Middle School and High School students.

Titu Andreescu is a catalyst for excitement in math for the young and talented. This collection of problems from an online contest is another of his additions to the fun awaiting those who are willing to take a chance. It is nice to have the problems all in book format. The problem sets cover a wide range of type and difficulty.

Innovative math ed design and implementation

What is a math meet? The traditional big events for problem-solving Math Circles are math competitions. There are many competitions, but Purple Comet! math meet stands out because of its clever, modern design. As other quality competitions, Purple Comet! offers children original, meaningful, interesting, tricky problems that are a joy to solve – that is, real mathematics. But there is more:

1. Global network, local communities. Purple Comet! is an international festival and an online event – but it consists of local experiences with friends. The global network generates energy, problem-posing support, and the sense of scale that a local circle would not achieve alone. But local communities provide the depth of discussion, camaraderie and nurturing that a global network lacks. Together, the two aspects work their magic.

2. Teamwork. The vast majority of math and science is done collaboratively, but children often take tests and competitions alone. Purple Comet! invites teams to solve problems together, only competing against other teams. This allows for more interesting types of problems. For example, some problems require insight, which is more likely to happen in group brainstorming. Other problems split into multiple sub-problems, so each person can tackle a piece of the bigger puzzle.

3. Technology is welcome. While doing things by hand can be artistic, quaint, or cute, most children who love science and math, and of course all STEM professionals, use computational tools in their problem-solving. Purple Comet! problems are designed with computing devices in mind. The problems focus on ingenuity and reasoning, rather than memory or computation. However, many problems are based on number patterns, so students learn to appreciate how numeracy and computational fluency help in problem-solving.

4. Self-checking. The design principle of self-checking goes back to Montessori. All problems have nonnegative integer answers. At the beginning, this principle made it easier to program Purple Comet! software. By now, it became an appreciated tradition. If a team gets a different sort of answer, they know to rework the problem. The known format of an answer is a hint, but not a big reveal, like knowing the correct answer would be.

You can use the book as a source of problems for family math or Math Circles.
