Q: What sparked this novel?
A: Two things. One: I wanted my kids to know where I came from. The very southern setting—North Florida on the St. Johns river, is where I grew up. And I wanted to give them a feel for that time and place. Watching the sunrise on a stinky crab boat in the St. Johns—what could be better?

And the second thing: When I'm not writing, I'm teaching kids. I see a lot of young people who have such promise but for some reason or another, give up right before they're about to make headway. I see my own kids struggling at certain points in their lives. And one thought keeps coming back: don't give up. So I wanted Jesse (main character in Seagull) to really have some heavy issues to navigate through: the death of his mother, Johnny the bully, and of course, the girl, Hailey. You'll have to read the book (savvy marketing ploy alert!) to find out how it all turned out for Jesse.

Q: Why should readers give this novel a try?
A: If I've done my job well, you'll enjoy the ride and maybe even get that little happy-glow feeling at the end like you just watched Rocky again, or someone said your hair looks nice, or you got an “A” on a pre-calc test. (Another genius bit of marketing there.)

Q: What kind of book is Seagull?
A: It's a coming of age southern novel with a young main character that should appeal to fiction readers of all ages. Younger readers will sympathize with our teen heroes Jesse and Matty and adult readers will be taken back to earlier days. My style has a literary feel, but the story is plot-driven and suspenseful, especially at the end. And even has a hint of romance.

nice surprise

I'm not sure how i ended up with this book. As a rule, i don't download anything less than 200 pages. The book's description would not have caught my attention. Yet it was on my kindle, so, without knowing anything about it, I assumed it was a book I'd selected. It was a total accident. Looking at the book's info when i came to write the review, I wouldnt have given this book or the author a second thought. I'd have passed it by and missed out on a wonderful book. (I suggest the author rework, or have reworked, the book's description.)

Starting and ending with an encounter with a bully, the author draws you into the life of a motherless boy taken in by his aunt and uncle. It's a classic and realistic coming-of-age tale where lessons are learned and the main character grows as a person.

A gem of a novella- my only complaint is that it was over too quickly.

If you love this place

I spent much of my adult life in north Florida when mini-malls were few and far between, and hunters crossing the road were more commonplace. This book expertly captures that lost world from the perspective of a tentative youth growing up in its bosom. An up close and personal account appropriate for any age level. If you love this place, you'll definitely love the book.

Satisfying read.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. It has its flaws, but, the finished product is a charming look into life in northeast Florida. While reading this book I was reminded of the characters and easy lifestyle of living in the south that I enjoyed in To Kill a Mockingbird. Well done!

enjoyable, fun book

one of my friends from years ago used to have this book and i was amazed by it. when i came across it here on amazon i had to get it. it's very detailed and i believe quite accurate. I really enjoy the numerology aspect, and that the 'horoscopes' are broken down not just by your astrological sign, but by the day you are born. very enjoyable, fun to break out at parties.

Astonishingly accurate!

This book is amazingly accurate. It's a great way to understand people that you meet, or friends, as it gives you insights you might otherwise miss. Granted, nothing is 100% accurate, and we shouldn't think that just because a book says it, that a person IS that way, but I've found it to be extremely accurate though. I was surprised at how many people I know already had this book, and when I show it to others, they're often on their phone ordering it a few minutes after perusing it. There are a couple of similar books that are also accurate, but this one is my favorite!

This is a fun book to read. :)

A plethora of information!

The presentation is organized and not complex which makes it a pleasure to peruse; however, I do recommend reading the Introduction to Astrology first if you are not initially familiar with the Zodiac as this will allow you better comprehension and insight to the remaining areas.

This book is different. It explores astrology from a far more interesting angle than the conventional astrology books I have previously encountered.

If you like basic astrology you'll love this book for all its fascinating "extras."

About the Author
As a child Keith Gray was a reluctant reader, considering books a necessary chore. He has since gone on to write over 10 books for teenagers, nearly all of which have won, or been shortlisted for, a major award. Keith has been a judge for various children's book awards including the Blue Peter Book Award and the Guardian Fiction Prize. He lives in Edinburgh.

A Compelling, Intense, Well-Written Ghost Story

"Ghosting" is accompanied by an interesting note, to wit - "This book is targeted for reluctant or struggling readers or children with dyslexia. The interest level is 11 and up while it is at a 4th grade reading level." I was intrigued by that description, and curious about what, if anything, would differentiate this book from more standard middle grade fare. The answer, for me, is that this book is a short, (really, it's a novella at most), intense, compelling read, written in a dynamic and straight forward style. This is a sophisticated book, not some sort of "chapter-book-lite", and it seems the main difference is that the narrative is stripped down, efficient, and effective. That's O.K. by me. It is not in any way condescending or "simple".

It seems that this book is aimed more at unmotivated or uninterested readers, or possibly kids who face social or family or similar pressures to not be readers or to not value reading. (As opposed to kids with actually learning disabilities, which is way beyond what I know about.) If that's the case, I am delighted to report that the solution offered here does not involve farts or boogers or frantic mayhem. There seem to be an awful lot of books out there recently that are based on the belief that boys, especially younger middle grade boys, will read books if there is enough simple-minded potty humor in them, and that girls will read anything with princesses or dreamy boy-toy vampires. I've read enough middle grade books to, with, and for kids to know that while potty humor and princesses have their places, there is a lot more going on in middle grader's heads than farting and choosing makeup.

So, what do you get with this book? (MILD SPOILER ALERT, IF YOU ARE VERY SENSITIVE ABOUT SPOILERS.) Well, Nat and Sandy are parentless, and are making their way by following in their deceased Mom's footsteps as a seance medium, (which she called "ghosting"). Sandy is the medium and younger brother Nat is her assistant. He is also the first person narrator of the story. The book opens with a very intense seance, which is followed up by an explanation from our narrator about the tricks of the trade. Later, the two siblings are drawn deeper and deeper into a seance with a creepy man, and apparently real ghostly doings spiral out of control from there.

This is an intense and compelling story. There is more violence and scary atmosphere than you'll ever find in a chapter book. I can understand why the publisher wants to get across the idea that the content is for an older crowd, even if the reading level is for a younger crowd. There isn't a great deal of character development, but the characters are as well drawn as most other middle grade characters. There isn't a lot of descriptive prose, but there is enough to set all of the scenes properly, and there are some nice, subtle and perceptive descriptive touches. (And as to that reading level, I have to say that I never got the feeling that anything had been oversimplified.)

So, this is a rewarding, well-constructed, satisfying, scary read. That's a fine and attractive package for me.

This is a thrilling story about two siblings Sandy and Nat who give ghosting sessions. There is a rumor that their mother could communicate with the dead and so can Sandy. Nat and Sandy are invited at Mrs. Mory's house to have a private session with a group of people, each one having their own secrets.
I won't give anything because the story is short.
I read it the day after Halloween, but I wish I read it on Halloween.
It was well-written. The pages were flowing very fast. After all, it's an awesome story.
Nat and Sandy made a great team.

They draw on his analysis of the music itself, and its place in history and in Viennese composer Franz Shubert's (1797-1828) body of work. About the Author
Mark DeVoto, born Cambridge, MA, in 1940, trained at the Longy School of Music, Harvard College, and Princeton University. A composer and writer, he is an expert on Alban Berg, Debussy, and early 20th centruy music generally. He edited the revised 4th (1978) and 5th (1987) editions of Walter Piston's Harmony, and prepared the score of Berg's Altenberg op.4, for the Berg complete edition (1997). He has taught at Reed College, the University of New Hampshire, and most recently was Professor of Music at Tufts University, retiring in 2000.

Since Amazon was unable to send me the correct book ... twice ... I had to purchase it from Barnes & Noble; however, I can report that the book is a "must-read" for Schubert fans and fans of symphonic sonatas in general.
