About the Author

Dawn Apgar, PhD, LSW, ACSW, has helped thousands of social workers across the country pass the examinations associated with all levels of licensure. In recent years, she has consulted in numerous states to assist with establishing licensure test preparation programs, including training the instructors.

Dr. Apgar has done research on licensure funded by the American Foundation for Research and Consumer Education in Social Work Regulation and is currently chairperson of her state's social work licensing board. She is a past President of the New Jersey Chapter of NASW and has been on its National Board of Directors. In 2014, the Chapter presented her with a Lifetime Achievement Award. Dr. Apgar has taught in both undergraduate and graduate social work programs and has extensive direct practice, policy, and management experience in the field.

It worked for me.

This, along with my DSM-5 and my NASW Code of Ethics, were the only materials I used to study for my ASWB LMSW exam that I passed today with flying colors. I studied for 2 days for 6 hours using this and for about a half a day on the Code of Ethics and DSM-5. I don't recommend cramming in that fashion for everyone, but it worked for me. It gave helpful information about the way the exam is structured, as well as about how to read through and answer the questions. It also gives a great review of the material we all learned in graduate school. There were a few things I went back and looked up for clarification, but really, I just felt like it mainly served the purpose of triggering my memory. I really recommend it.

I would definitely recommend this book for those studying for their LSW exam

I am a resident of Pennsylvania and purchased this book to study for my LSW exam. Despite the fact that I am writing this review prior to taking the exam I will say that the book has been extremely helpful. The tips she provides for how to answer the questions are spot on. I would definitely recommend this book for those studying for their LSW exam.

Review of Intro to World's Oceans

I'm so glad I bought this book on-line. It is in excellent shape for a used textbook. It suprised that the condition is like new. I paid about 1/4 of the cost that the college bookstore wanted, and also found out that the college won't be using this book next semester, so it was an excellent purchase all around. The book itself is a keeper. I'm only taking Oceanograpy because it's a college requirement for a science, but the book is full of information that I would like to have on hand, so I'll probably keep it. Lots of great pictures, too.

After more than 30 years, the basic purpose of this book can still be expressed by the following three paragraphs extracted from the Preface of the first edition of Mechanical Measurements, published in 1961.

Experimental development has become a very important aspect of mechanical design procedure. In years past the necessity for "ironing out the bugs" was looked upon as an unfortunate turn of events, casting serious doubts on the abilities of a design staff. With the ever-increasing complexity and speed of machinery, a changed design philosophy has been forced on both the engineering profession and industrial management alike. An experimental development period is now looked upon, not as a problem to avoid, but as an integral phase of the whole design procedure. Evidence supporting this contention is provided by the continuing growth of research and development companies, subsidiaries, teams, and armed services R & D programs.

At the same time, it should not be construed that the experimental development (design) approach reduces the responsibilities attending the preliminary planning phases of a new device or process. In fact, knowledge gained through experimental programs continually strengthens and supports the theoretical phases of design.

Measurement and the correct interpretation thereof are necessary parts of any engineering research and development program. Naturally, the measurements must supply reliable information and their meanings must be correctly comprehended and interpreted. It is the primary purpose of this book to supply a basis for such measurement.

With the fifth edition of Mechanical Measurements considerable changes and improvements have occurred. Foremost a new co-author, Dr. John H. Lienhard, has been added. In addition, more than half of the chapters in the book have been substantially revised. Some specific changes are as follows:

The uncertainty material in Chapter 3 has been fully revised and follows the ASME standards.

New material on discrete sampling and discrete Fourier transforms has been added in Chapter 4 and also in Chapter 8.

New material on semiconductor sensors has been added in Chapter 6 and also in Chapter 16.

The sections on filters and op-amps in Chapter 7 have been revised and updated.

Laser-based velocity and displacement measurement has been introduced in Chapter 15 and also in Chapters 11 and 17.

New material on sound intensity and noise measurement has been added in Chapter 18.

Recent changes in measurement standards are incorporated in Chapter 2.

The remainder of the material has been substantially updated, and approximately 40 percent of the problems have been replaced or revised.

The authors do not suggest that the sequence of materials as presented need be strictly adhered to. After more than 30 years, the basic purpose of this book can still be expressed by the following three paragraphs extracted from the Preface of the first edition of Mechanical Measurements, published in 1961.

Experimental development has become a very important aspect of mechanical design procedure. In years past the necessity for "ironing out the bugs" was looked upon as an unfortunate turn of events, casting serious doubts on the abilities of a design staff. With the ever-increasing complexity and speed of machinery, a changed design philosophy has been forced on both the engineering profession and industrial management alike. An experimental development period is now looked upon, not as a problem to avoid, but as an integral phase of the whole design procedure. Evidence supporting this contention is provided by the continuing growth of research and development companies, subsidiaries, teams, and armed services R & D programs.

At the same time, it should not be construed that the experimental development (design) approach reduces the responsibilities attending the preliminary planning phases of a new device or process. In fact, knowledge gained through experimental programs continually strengthens and supports the theoretical phases of design.

Measurement and the correct interpretation thereof are necessary parts of any engineering research and development program. Naturally, the measurements must supply reliable information and their meanings must be correctly comprehended and interpreted. It is the primary purpose of this book to supply a basis for such measurement.

With the fifth edition of Mechanical Measurements considerable changes and improvements have occurred. Foremost a new co-author, Dr. John H. Lienhard, has been added. In addition, more than half of the chapters in the book have been substantially revised. Some specific changes are as follows:

  • The uncertainty material in Chapter 3 has been fully revised and follows the ASME standards.
  • New material on discrete sampling and discrete Fourier transforms has been added in Chapter 4 and also in Chapter 8.
  • New material on semiconductor sensors has been added in Chapter 6 and also in Chapter 16.
  • The sections on filters and op-amps in Chapter 7 have been revised and updated.
  • Laser-based velocity and displacement measurement has been introduced in Chapter 15 and also in Chapters 11 and 17.
  • New material on sound intensity and noise measurement has been added in Chapter 18.
  • Recent changes in measurement standards are incorporated in Chapter 2.
  • The remainder of the material has been substantially updated, and approximately 40 percent of the problems have been replaced or revised.

The authors do not suggest that the sequence of materials as presented need be strictly adhered to. Just as advertised and delivery was fast.

Just as advertised and delivery was fast. For future buyers: because this Is an international version some of the Homework questions do not match at all or are missing. The text is the same, so I just copy the question down from a friend that has the full edition and use the text to help me. I knew this was a possibility when I got this cheaper version. This is not in any ways the seller’s fault.

Recommended for class and occupation

This book was required for senior level class at university. This book was used in tandum with a Labview instruction manual to learn how to perform experiments for mechnical engineering in the lab. It provided the theory needed to understand and complete the experiments. I give only 3 stars because it reads like a text book, and can be very dense at times. Otherwise I would recommend this to students and professionals alike.

Definitively worth keeping!

I loved this book. One of my favorite classes so far in my mechanical engineering career. Maybe a little more examples would've been helpful, but if you have a good professor then more examples are not needed.
I actually enjoyed reading this book, and I wish I would've bought a hardcover instead of paperback

Elegant, interesting, but ultimately not useful

This author is an experienced, expert book designer, who has designed numerous art books and art catalogues (among many others). But somehow he seems to have missed some important points vital to good book design.

For instance, he is undoubtedly really, really good at choosing fonts that accurately reflect the content and tone of the books he is designing. However, he had somehow missed the point that the font chosen for the body of the book has to be both legible and readable. Quite often, the fonts he chooses are not at all readable. That includes the font used for this book (a typewriter font). Now, a typewriter font is undeniably appropriate to a book titled "Notes on..." anything, but the total lack of weight variation in the letters and the small size of the type made it very hard to read. And (just one more example) using Gill Sans for books about modern artists is undeniably appropriate, but reading a book with the body text set in san serif is like trying to read a book length caption--exhausting.

Then there is the placement of artwork across spreads. As the spreads are shown in this book--as they appear on boards or in a page layout program--they look fabulous. But once these books are bound, anything within 3/8" (roughly) of the gutter just disappear into the binding. Open a book. Look at where the paper disappears into the binding. Imagine important parts of a painting printed on the page going down into the binding. Imagine how you'd feel if you had bought a book to look at that art.

On the other hand, he did offer some interesting insight into how to place art in books without losing sight of relative size of the originals. It is a beautiful (if not readable) volume, and the examples are elegantly rendered. I don't think it's worth the price, however.

Unfortunately Useless

As anyone who makes a living designing books can tell you, most books are not $200 art books. But that's what Derek Birdsall seems to concentrate on in his "Notes on Book Design." Really, it's a no-brainer to make the art as large as possible and have the specs in a sans serif font. I don't need endless examples showing me exactly that. I'd like to see what Birdsall does with 30,000 words that the publisher insists page out to 272 pages in a 6 x 9 size, but "not look too horsey or airy." I bet he'd quit.

Addditionally, his choice of a typewriter font for the text make the book useless to the reader. Birdsall insists his publisher could not choose a better font--I doubt that. I got one for ya, Birdsall--Garamond. You should try it some time!

Ultimately, the tome serves neither the page designs shown as illustrations (too small in most cases) nor the reader. Perhaps a design student may get something out of this, but there must be better books out there on the same subject.

Simplicity + Clarity = Elegance

Just lift the cover to this lovely book and the endpaper has a quote from George Orwell's 1946 book 'Politics and the English Language'
What am I trying to say?
What words will express it?
What image or idiom will make it clearer?
Is this image fresh enough to have an effect?
Could I have put it more shortly?
Have I said anything that is avoidably ugly?
Although he was referring to writing I feel these thoughts could easily apply to publication designers and Derek Birdsall's book is a fine visual example of putting them into practice.

I thought the clever thing about the book was the way it explains design by using examples of Birdsall's work, so you get to see plenty of his spreads and their presentation is the design explanation. The two chapters, 'The process of book design' and 'Book design in practice' covers a whole range of creative solutions. Throughout he offers thoughts and practical observations with the second chapter devoted to many spreads from books and here I found perhaps the most fascinating section, his re-design of 'Common Worship, Services and Prayers for the Church of England'. Surely the ultimate creative (and intellectual) challenge, 860 pages, type only and two colors. As a publication designer I've always maintained that the most rewarding jobs are the simplest in appearance, airline timetables or tax forms for instance, where the creative resources are limited yet the information conveyed needs to be totally unambiguous. Birdsall's design solution to 'Common Worship' looks so right that you are not aware of the design and that is just as it should be. The back of the book has sample text settings (in foreign languages, too) and some very hands-on information about grids for books.

'Notes on book' design is beautifully produced and printed and a first-class review of a leading book designer's work. I think it looks so good I've added it to my Listmania, 'My favorite well-designed books' list.

RATING FOR THE KINDLE VERSION - DO NOT BUY FOR KINDLE!

This book is really good, but I should have listened to the previous comment about the KINDLE VERSION being difficult to read. The footnotes are not accessible and where pictures should be it just says "can't put photo" or something. I bought this one week ago exactly and it will not let me return it. I wish I could return it and get the hard copy, it is really a good book but I do not enjoy reading it on the kindle because I feel like I am missing a lot and that is no fun.

What are you waiting for?

Great book. I can't believe I took so long to get around to buying it. It's not necessarily the type of book I'd read over and over, but I will definitely be lending it to friends to read. Just a very well written book and obviously a unique story. If you like Criminal Minds, Law and Order and those kind of shows you will love this book. Written from the prosecutor's perspective, there are details and explanations that are just...well, real.

Recommended.

I purchased the hard copy as recommend by another reader. Apparently the kindle version doesn't have the pictures that are in the hard copy. If that's the case (I can't be sure because I didn't order the kindle copy), I would HIGHLY recommend you purchase and read this one!

I loved this book. Incredibly interesting and detailed. Could not put it down. Have read it 3 times in a row. Such a sad gruesome true crime story. Vincent Bugliosi, prosecutor in the Sharon Tate and LaBianca murders captured details from beginning to end of each case. An amazing attorney and author. Recommended for any and all who enjoy true crime stories and can handle some gore and heartache:( as this book has it all.

Not Just A Child's Book

A # 1 story of pioneer ingenuity existing in extreme cold (- 40 degrees), without food (wheat gone, few potatoes), no coal for heating (slow burning twisted hay all that is available), and no outside support (attempts to open a cut in the rail line failed time and again) of a small town on the rail head in Minnesota when the train from Chicago could not get through for months. Two young men, willing to die for the community hear rumors of a farmer wintering over 20 to 40 miles south of town, hitch their horses to wagon sleds at 3 AM and start out. After 20 miles one says, "How far will we go?" to the answer, "Until we find wheat." They see a lone tree, good sign, later see smoke, a better sign. The farmer is not willing to sell, he needs it for spring planting. The boys point out that they are giving three times the price and free shipping. On the way home a sled falls into a depression, several times, turning over and dumping the 120 pound bags. Bitter cold, feeling lost in hands and feet, the afternoon stars are obliterated by a blizzard coming behind them.

Amazing story of teen age Laura Ingalls teaching in a small school with few students 20 miles from home. I see the 20-40 below wind chill in ND and Minnesota, and think of our pioneers, and how they with internal, Godly strength, made it. Great read.

A Wonderful Read!!!

This books storyline had me hooked from beginning to end and I devoured it. I loved the fact that I was reading a factual story written by Laura Ingalls Wilder herself telling how her and her family went through a long and very hard winter that occurs like once every 21 years. Blizzard after blizzard hits that last 3-4 days at a time and the pattern goes on for months. The snow is so deep its higher than the door openings. The house is freezing cold except for around the fireplace that's heated with the only provision available, straw that Pa and Laura twist into "logs" to put in the fireplace. Their food supply slowly dwindles and the family is forced to ration what they have left in order to survive because the train bringing food and provisions is buried on the tracks the next town over and even though Pa and other townfolk hike down the tracks to try and shovel it free, they come close but have to quite and hurry home because another blizzard hits and buries the train again. This book is a fabulous read for people of all ages. I highly recommend it to everyone!

Listen to a classic

I grew up on the Little House books and still like to go back and reread them occasionally, for their wisdom, their entertainment value and for their glimpses of a long gone lifestyle. I picked up a couple of them in audiobook form and decided to listen to one the other day. Over all, the books hold up well in audio format. Some events take on a different color or emphasis when you listen to them, as opposed to reading the words on a page. Almanzo and Cap's journey to find the wheat was especially exciting from that standpoint. These would be wonderful family listening while on a road trip or at bedtime. My only objection was with the reader. She's okay when she's just reading the book, but when she tries to "sing" (and there is a surprising amount of music in the Little House books), especially when she's singing as "Pa", it's almost unbearable. She has perhaps the most unmelodic voice I've ever heard. I found myself turning down the volume until the song was over. Otherwise, I highly recommend the audio version of these books.

About the Author
Philip C. Kolin is the University Distinguished Professor in the Department of English at the University of Southern Mississippi, where for 40 years he has taught courses in composition, business and technical writing, literature, and research methods. He has extensive experience as an editor of several scholarly journals and is the co-founder of STUDIES IN AMERICAN DRAMA (1945-present). He received the Conference of Learned Journals award for the best new journal. In addition, he was also named Southern Mississippi's first Distinguished Professor in the Humanities. Dr. Kolin has published almost 40 books and 200 scholarly articles covering a variety of subjects, including writing, drama, linguistics, and popular culture. He also has written an award-winning book on professional writing for nurses and articles on writing for lawyers and other professionals. Over the years, he has conducted workshops on technical business writing, the publication process, and managing professional communications. He received his Ph.D. from Northwestern University.
