A riveting examination of a nation in crisis, from one of the finest political journalists of our generation

American democracy is beset by a sense of crisis. Seismic shifts during a single generation have created a country of winners and losers, allowing unprecedented freedom while rending the social contract, driving the political system to the verge of breakdown, and setting citizens adrift to find new paths forward. In The Unwinding, George Packer, author of The Assassins' Gate: America in Iraq, tells the story of the United States over the past three decades in an utterly original way, with his characteristically sharp eye for detail and gift for weaving together complex narratives.
The Unwinding journeys through the lives of several Americans, including Dean Price, the son of tobacco farmers, who becomes an evangelist for a new economy in the rural South; Tammy Thomas, a factory worker in the Rust Belt trying to survive the collapse of her city; Jeff Connaughton, a Washington insider oscillating between political idealism and the lure of organized money; and Peter Thiel, a Silicon Valley billionaire who questions the Internet's significance and arrives at a radical vision of the future. Packer interweaves these intimate stories with biographical sketches of the era's leading public figures, from Newt Gingrich to Jay-Z, and collages made from newspaper headlines, advertising slogans, and song lyrics that capture the flow of events and their undercurrents.
The Unwinding portrays a superpower in danger of coming apart at the seams, its elites no longer elite, its institutions no longer working, its ordinary people left to improvise their own schemes for success and salvation. Packer's novelistic and kaleidoscopic history of the new America is his most ambitious work to date.

From Booklist
*Starred Review* How have we come to feel that neither the government nor the private sector works as it should and that the shrinking middle class has few prospects of recovering its former glory? Through profiles of several Americans, from a factory worker to an Internet billionaire, Packer, staff writer for the New Yorker, offers a broad and compelling perspective on a nation in crisis. Packer focuses on the lives of a North Carolina evangelist, son of a tobacco farmer, pondering the new economy of the rural South; a Youngstown, Ohio, factory worker struggling to survive the decline of the manufacturing sector; a Washington lobbyist confronting the distance between his ideals and the realities of the nation’s capital; and a Silicon Valley entrepreneur pondering the role of e-commerce in a radically changing economy. Interspersed throughout are profiles of leading economic, political, and cultural figures, including Newt Gingrich, Colin Powell, Raymond Carver, Sam Walton, and Jay-Z. Also sprinkled throughout are alarming headlines, news bites, song lyrics, and slogans that capture the unsettling feeling that the nation and its people are adrift. Packer offers an illuminating, in-depth, sometimes frightening view of the complexities of decline and the enduring hope for recovery. --Vanessa Bush

From Bookforum
Though The Unwinding is manifestly an homage to the U.S.A. trilogy of John Dos Passos, Packer attempts something far more ambitious and original. The book, an epic retelling of American history from 1978 to 2012, is a kind of fantasia--a set of variations on themes without the support of an overarching narrative. This is a brilliant and innovative book that transcends journalism to become literature. --Michael Lind

Review

“[The Unwinding] hums--with sorrow, with outrage and with compassion . . . Packer's gifts are Steinbeckian in the best sense of that term . . . [Packer has] written something close to a nonfiction masterpiece.” ―Dwight Garner, The New York Times

“Gripping . . . deeply affecting . . . beautifully reported.” ―David Brooks, The New York Times Book Review

“Remarkable.” ―Joe Klein, Time

“Packer's dark rendering of the state of the nation feels pained but true. He offers no false hopes, no Hollywood endings, but he finds power in . . . the dignity and heart of a people.” ―The Washington Post

“[The Unwinding] has many of the qualities of an epic novel . . . [a] professional work of journalism that also happens to be more intimate and textured--and certainly more ambitious--than most contemporary works of U.S. fiction dare to be . . . What distinguishes The Unwinding is the fullness of Packer's portraits, his willingness to show his subjects' human desires and foibles, and to give each of his subjects a fully throated voice.” ―Héctor Tobar, The Los Angeles Times

“A monumental work that is both intimate and sweeping . . . Packer's writing dazzles . . . [his] reporting excels . . . The cumulative effect is extraordinary.” ―Ken Armstrong, The Seattle Times

“Brilliant. Harrowing. Gorgeously written . . . The Unwinding is a lyrical requiem for a lost time, for downsized dreams and surrendered hopes. It's beautiful . . . but also . . . heartbreaking, a lush work of art that hurts all the more for being about the loss of hope and promise in America.” ―The Daily Kos

“This is a work not just of fact, but of wit, irony, and astounding imagination.” ―Lorin Stein, The Paris Review

“A work of prodigious, highly original reporting . . . [Packer] demonstrates that the future of reporting out in world isn't in eclipse . . . Packer's arduous venture commands attention.” ―Joseph Lelyveld, The New York Review of Books

“Wide ranging, deeply reported, historically grounded and ideologically restrained . . . Instead of compelling us to engage with his theory of the past 35 years of the American experience, Packer invites us to explore the experience itself, as lived by our fellow citizens. They're human beings, not evidence for an agenda or fodder for talking points. Understanding that is the first step toward reclaiming the nation we share with them.” ―Laura Miller, Salon

“[Packer is] among the best non-fiction writers in America . . . [he] weaves an unforgettable tapestry . . . In its sensibility, The Unwinding is closer to a novel than a work of non-fiction. It is all the more powerful for it.” ―Edward Luce, The Financial Times

“Fascinating . . . elegant . . . A richly complex narrative brew.” ―The Chicago Tribune

“[An] awe-inspiring X-Ray of the modern American soul.” ―The Millions

“A brilliant and innovative book that transcends journalism to become literature.” ―Bookforum

“[S]uperbly written and consistently thought-provoking . . . The Unwinding is long-form journalism at its best.” ―Dallas News

“Masterful . . . thoughtful, thorough, and persuasive . . . the payoff comes when Packer's various elements combine in powerful and startling ways . . . What will stay with you . . . are the book's people, people Packer never turns into ideological mascots, people who struggle to survive, to create, to improve, even as the systems of support erode around them.” ―The Christian Science Monitor

“Packer writes . . . beautifully and precisely; respectfully and, when warranted, critically. There is a straightforward and generous humanity in his prose.” ―Michael Tomasky, The Daily Beast

“Packer's strength as a storyteller lies in his ability to marshal a diverse range of voices from across the class divide, in a nation deeply divided by social status.” ―NPR Books.org

“Packer's is an American voice of exceptional clarity and humanity in a tradition of reportage that renders the quotidian extraordinary. When our descendants survey the ruins of this modern imperium and sift its cultural detritus, American voices like this will be the tiny treasures that endure.” ―The Independent (UK)

“This angry, wise and moving state-of-the-union address is too subtle and clever to be prescriptive. Packer offers no simplistic solutions. But here's the thing. The writing in this fine work showcases the very same qualities of democratic generosity and fair-mindedness whose supposed disappearance in America its author most laments.” ―The Telegraph (UK)

“Exemplary journalism . . . A foundational document in the literature of the end of America.” ―Kirkus (starred review)

“A broad and compelling perspective on a nation in crisis . . . an illuminating, in-depth, sometimes frightening view of the complexities of decline and the enduring hope of recovery.” ―Booklist (starred review)

“Trenchant . . . [the] brief biographies of seminal figures that shaped the current state of affairs offer the book's fiercest prose, such as in Packer's brutal takedown of Robert Rubin, secretary of the Treasury during some key 1990s financial deregulation that amplified the severity of the Great Recession of 2008. Packer has a keen eye for the big story in the small moment, writing about our fraying social fabric with talent that matches his dismay.” ―Publishers Weekly (starred review)

“The Unwinding . . . echoes the symphonic rage of the celebrated television series The Wire . . . a tremendous work of reporting that pushes past abstractions and recycled debates . . . Whatever one’s views on American decline generally, it is difficult to put the book down without . . . a conviction that we can do better. And yet if it is a story of despair, it is also a story of resilience. Packer’s subjects make good and bad decisions, enjoy lucky breaks and misfortune, eke it out, give in, and try harder. The lives they lead are worth describing in detail, not only because they are instructive but also because they are beautiful.
” ―The Washington Monthly

“[A] sprawling, trenchant narrative . . . Packer is a thorough, insightful journalist, and his in-depth profiles provide a window into American life as a whole . . . The Unwinding is a harrowing and bracing panoramic look at American society―things are bad everywhere, for everyone, but there’s still a sense of optimism. Through hard work and dedication we can pull ourselves out of the financial, political, and social mess we’ve created and become stronger as individuals and ultimately as a society.” ―The Brooklyn Rail

“George Packer has crafted a unique, irresistible contraption of a book. Not since John Dos Passos's celebrated U.S.A. trilogy, which The Unwinding recollects and rivals, has a writer so cunningly plumbed the seething undercurrents of American life. The result is a sad but delicious jazz-tempo requiem for the post-World War II American social contract. You will often laugh through your tears at these tales of lives of ever-less-quiet desperation in a land going ever-more-noisily berserk.” ―David M. Kennedy, Pulitzer Prize–winning author of Freedom from Fear and Over Here

“The Unwinding is the extraordinary story of what’s happened to our country over the past thirty years. George Packer gives us an intimate look into American lives that have been transformed by the dissolution of all the things that used to hold us together. The result is an epic―wondrous, bracing, and true―that will stand as the defining book of our time.” ―Dexter Filkins, author of The Forever War

“The Unwinding presents a big, gorgeous, sad, utterly absorbing panorama of the relentless breakdown of the American social compact over a generation. George Packer communicates the scope and the human experience of the enormous change that is his subject better than any writer has so far.” ―Nicholas Lemann, author of Redemption and The Promised Land

“Original, incisive, courageous, and essential. One of the best works of nonfiction I've read in years.” ―Katherine Boo, National Book Award–winning author of Behind the Beautiful Forevers

“George Packer serves us the history of our own life and times in a magisterial look at the America we lost.” ―Lawrence Wright, Pulitzer Prize–winning author of The Looming Tower and Going Clear

“The hearts and lives broken in this second great depression have now found their eloquent voice and fierce champion in George Packer. The Unwinding is an American tragedy and a literary triumph.” ―David Frum, author of Comeback and Why Romney Lost

“As with George Orwell's, each of George Packer's sentences carries a pulse of moral force. The Unwinding is a sweeping and powerful book that everyone should read.” ―David Grann, author of The Lost City of Z

“George Packer is a modern-day George Orwell . . . The places he writes about are never stages for personal or ideological heroism. They are always real and full of frustrating facts that expose both liberal and conservative absolutism as reckless attempts to deny reality.” ―Jed Lipinski, The Village Voice on George Packer

Institutions vs. Individuals
By Lukester
First off, this is not a polemical book with Packer trying to thrust his viewpoint down your throat. Packer's own voice is largely absent from this book. Instead, he lets his characters speak for themselves. Regardless of your politics, you have to agree with Packer that since the 1960's, Americans have "watched structures that had been in place before your birth collapse like pillars of salt across the vast visible landscape." Government no longer consists of genuine politicians seeking to help the people, banks are no longer the staid institutions we once knew, and American manufacturing and the stable union jobs that accompanied it are mostly gone. As Packer notes, the loss of these institutions has obviously hurt some and helped others to prosper.

Packer tells this story by presenting a series of compelling profiles of several individuals: among them a union worker in Youngstown, Ohio, a entrepreneur/bio-fuels evangelist in North Carolina, a D.C. insider, and a Silicon Valley innovator. These profiles follow the progression of their protagonist from the late 70's to the present day. Each story is independent, but all share a common thread: as the institutions that provided security to Americans following the New Deal and into the 70's started to fall apart, each person is forced to deal with their new found freedom. Some thrive, while others struggle to survive.

Interspersed in these longer narratives are shorter profiles of key players in the unwinding, from Newt Gingrich and Andrew Breitbart to Oprah Winfrey and Jay-Z. As he skips ahead in years, each new section is foreshadowed by a collage of words - snippets of movie and music quotes and headlines from newspapers - that Packer uses to expertly capture the mood of each year.

The genius of this book is that Packer doesn't tell you what to think. Instead, he presents indisputable facts by way of the stories of real people to show both sides of this "unwinding." At the end, you can draw your own conclusions. Packer is simply using his amazing powers of shaping narratives to capture this unique time of upheaval in America. It's easy to lose track of the drastic changes that have taken place over the last few decades unless you read a book like this, which captures the transformation of American institutions to American individualism. If you are liberal and mourn the loss of these institutions, Packer will force you to consider the opening of opportunities that came with these losses. If you're conservative and applaud the rise of the rugged individual, he will also make you recognize the price some people have paid due to the loss of security.

I would recommend this book to anyone that sees the change that has happened in the U.S. Although it is never stated, I think Packer is asking his readers a seemingly simple question: what does it mean to be an American, and what do we want this country to be? Is the price of freedom the loss of the common bonds that kept us all together, or is the overriding right to be free paramount to all else? I can guarantee that anyone who finishes this book will have a lot to think about and will have enjoyed reading these profiles.

Explains the failures that led to the Trump Presidency
By Carl Nelson
I'm fairly confident that this was not George Packers intention, but I come away from his book with a better understanding of the forces that caused American voters to reject traditional politicians. Packed tells the stories unknown Americans and interleaved them with stories of Americans from the news stories. This effectively explains what was happening on the ground, and how reassuring discussed in politics and the media. Here is hoping that Trump does not appoint Goldman Sachs alums to key economic positions, like Obama mistakenly did.

Split Personality
By Robert Taylor Brewer
George Packer, we learn from the book's jacket blurb, is a staff writer at The New Yorker magazine which means he has access to that publication's marvelous fact checking apparatus that is so good, many fact checkers at The New Yorker have gone on to write their own non fiction books. Packer has borrowed liberally from the John Dos Pasos U.S.A. Trilogy, especially its "Camera Eye" sequences to produce a book with an artistic sense of the possible, and the creative interpretations that go along with them.

Through a series of glimmering short essays, Packer has put together a story of how wealth has concentrated itself in the United States in the second half of the twentieth century, and the first decade of the 21st. One lesson most of us learned about the Great Depression was that the wealthy, by themselves, could not sustain the U.S. economy in 1932. One commentator wrote that every person making over $100,000 would have had to buy 32 cars in order to stave off the economic consequences of the 1929 stock market crash. On the contrary, the lesson drawn by Packer about the 2008 Great Recession is that today, the wealthy are so wealthy they can indeed sustain the U.S. economy almost by themselves. This staggering conclusion is brought home to readers in Packer's brief but luminous essay on Sam Walton where he writes that six of Walton's descendants had as much money as 30% of the least well off Americans. The story of how America's other top income earners fared until the onset of The Great Recession is told in the essay on Robert Rubin: the top 1% of wage earners saw their incomes triple. People in the middle enjoyed a 20% income increase, people at the bottom had flat income which means on an inflation adjusted basis, they lost money. For his part, Robert Rubin argued against regulation of derivatives. Then, after derivatives killed America in 2008, Robert Rubin argued against any responsibility. When a Congressional investigator told Rubin he couldn't have it both ways, Robert Rubin hurriedly left the room. Stop the cameras, stop the book. The fact that Robert Rubin was allowed to leave the room comes off as a major thesis of this book.

The gap between what Americans have and what they cheer for is another layer of Packer's analysis, although the book's commentary is somehow less successful when ordinary Americans like Tammy Thomas and Dean Price are Packer's subjects and I was less willing to follow their stories than I was when household name personalties like Joe Biden and Newt Gingrich were under Packer's microscope and his work on them seemed spellbinding.

This is a deeply unsettling book, and in the end, Unwinding seems an inappropriate description for it - The Great Adjustment seems more specifically geared to what actually took place in the country - those with more struggle to adjust to unfathomable wealth, those with less struggling with their new reality.

I read this as part of The Seduction in the Sun Box Set, but I decided to review the books individually.

This was a short, erotic story. The tone was kind of confusing. Was Angelica scared or turned on? She seemed to be both and neither was that convincing. And she seemed to go from shy virgin to willing threesome participant in 2.5 seconds.

Likewise, the sheikh seemed to be angry and violent one moment, and unbelievably romantic and mushy the next.

I just couldn't connect with anyone in the story.

Review
A monstrous primordial sentient nuclear chaos, Azathoth has existed since the beginning of the universe, dwelling beyond normal space and time. It's amorphous body writhes unceasingly to the monotonous piping of a flute. The concept of Azathoth is central to Lovecraft's Cthulhu Mythos and appears in the tales in this fantasy anthology. A memorable assemblage of some of the best Lovecraftian fiction available today. -- Midwest Book Review

Good Cthulhu's fiction
By Persio Sandir Doliveira
This is number 6 of Chaosium "Call of Cthulhu" fiction series. There are good tales, regular ones and one or two weaks. I liked Thomas Liggoti's "The sect of th idiot", as well as Pickman's contribution (hahaha!) to the book. I didn't like the Simon of Gita story, but the book, as a whole, was good.

A Must Own for all Mythos fans
By Drew Meger
Chaosium prides itself on its ability to uncover and deliver rare stories, poems, and other such works of the Cthulhu Mythos. Their 6th book of the Cthulhu Cycle Books, The Azathoth Cycle, is no exception to this rule.
Robert Price, the series editor, presents a clear and entertaining introduction that has the good fortune to be easily understood by those unfamiliar to the Mythos, as well as providing valuable insights to Mythos veterans.
This book is wisely based around the first passage, Edward Pickman Derby's poem 'Azathoth,' a must read for any aspiring Lovecraftian. Many of the stories, by both obscure and known contributers to the Mythos, deal with the subjects presented in 'Azathoth,' thus allowing the reader to gain a better understanding of the work at large. For a fan to own all the stories presented in this book, they would have had to have begun their Mythos collection years ago, collecting obscure fan-zines and short story publications. 'The Azathoth Cycle' presents an excellent starting point for the newer generation of Lovecraft fanatics, giving them a pointer towards Mythos authors such as Campbell, Carter, Price, and Derby.
All in all, Chaosium has done it again, presenting a valuable Mythos work (though, after reading it, one is inclined to say 'tome') for both those new to the worlds of H. P. Lovecraft, and those who have dwelled in those darker recesses of the human soul for years.

Excellent Collection
By Alexander Scott
If the goal of Chaosium was to collect some of the best stories about Azathoth in one place for our consumption, then GREAT JOB.
Many of these stories seemed entirely original from a Mythos standpoint. THE SPACE OF MADNESS was intriguing from the standpoint of space exploration, and the plot device in THE PLAGUE JAR was interesting. The poem AZATHOTH and THE INSECTS FROM SHAGGAI were good classics. A few stories, such as THE PIT OF THE SHOGGOTHS and THE THRONE OF ACHAMOTH simply interested me. And then there's the pulp filler that's thematic. Very good overall.
My only problem was that the spine was not sturdy. Some of the other books from the same series have held up better. It's not important to everyone, but I like my purchased books to remain in good condition.

The natural numbers have been studied for thousands of years, yet most undergraduate textbooks present number theory as a long list of theorems with little mention of how these results were discovered or why they are important. Written in an informal style by an award-winning teacher, Number Theory covers prime numbers, Fibonacci numbers, and a host of other essential topics in number theory, while also telling the stories of the great mathematicians behind these developments, including Euclid, Carl Friedrich Gauss, and Sophie Germain. This one-of-a-kind introductory textbook features an extensive set of problems that enable students to actively reinforce and extend their understanding of the material, as well as fully worked solutions for many of these problems. It also includes helpful hints for when students are unsure of how to get started on a given problem.

Review
"An excellent contribution to the list of elementary number theory textbooks. Number theory, it is true, has as rich a history as any branch of mathematics, and Watkins has done terrific work in integrating the stories of the people behind this subject with the traditional topics of elementary number theory. There is more than enough material here for a one-semester course, and while this is standard for textbooks at this level, the added historical and biographical material--which cover mathematical developments and people well into the 20th century--are well worth the increased weight of the text."--Mark Bollman, MAA Reviews

From the Back Cover

"I know of no other book at this easily accessible level that combines extensive coverage of the mathematics with so many interesting biographical facts and anecdotes."--Thomas W. Cusick, University at Buffalo, State University of New York

"This is a very nice introductory text on number theory. It has a good selection of topics, lots of nice history, and many exercises. There is a lot to like here."--David A. Cox, Amherst College

"Watkins has advanced an outstanding and engaging treatise on the elementary theory of numbers. I expect it to be extremely valuable in inspiring young minds to think deeply about mathematics, and intend to use this text in my own courses on the topic."--Alex Kontorovich, Yale University

About the Author
John J. Watkins is professor emeritus of mathematics at Colorado College. His books include Across the Board: The Mathematics of Chessboard Problems (Princeton), Topics in Commutative Ring Theory (Princeton), Graphs: An Introductory Approach, and Combinatorics: Ancient and Modern.

very nice text for non-majors
By Christine
This text is quite a nice introduction to number theory requiring mostly high school mathematics and some calculus in a few places. Quite suitable for students who want to get a sense of mathematics but are not committed to its study. The historical elements situate the mathematics in their time and convey effectively human aspects of the doing of mathematics as opposed to conveying the substance without a sense of the process.

Further, the Kindle version is very excellent since it's a print replica (a wrapped version of a PDF) of the text which means that the eBook form will faithfully preserve the mathematical typesetting precisely as set for printing. This is unlike the completely unsatisfactory results of so many of the mathematical and physics texts which are delivered via the ordinary Kindle format, that suffer from images for equations that don't scale with the font sizing and so on. Kudos to whoever decided on print replica for this text. May others take notice!

Review
"Dr. Andrew Saul's new book, Niacin: The Real Story is co-written with Abram Hoffer M.D., Ph.D., presents some very compelling evidence to support treating most psychotic disorders as a vitamin B3 deficiency. Considering it is very inexpensive and has virtually no dangerous side effects, niacin would certainly be worth a consideration for anyone who has a family member with this mental health challenge. I highly recommend picking up this book and learning more about its use."
(Dr. Joseph Mercola)

"Niacin: The Real Story is a classic." (Dr. Richard Passwater)

About the Author
I have lived a full, interesting and creative life supported by my family and many friends and irritated and spurred on by the hostile criticisms of a group of psychiatrists representing APA and NIMH. I was born on a farm in Southern Saskatchewan in 1917, completed High School in a rural school, my PhD at University of Minnesota and Medical degree at University of Toronto. By the time I got my first job I was 33 years old, had three children and was totally fed up with being a student. The last thing in the world I wanted to do was to become a psychiatrist, then the lowest branch of medicine. My wife Rose put up with these long student years while she brought up our three children. Bill became one of the world€™s best antiquarian book experts. He died 6 years ago from lung cancer. John is a Professor of Medicine at McGill University in Montreal a great clinician and researcher into nutrition, and Miriam is dietitian at Women College hospital in Toronto and recently published her very good book Fueling Body, Mind and Spirit. Rose died in August 2001 and since then I am alone but absorbed with my family and my work. I have the support of remarkable friends and scientists and all of us working together will eventually overhaul medicine back to its interest in nutrition and in nutrients. Since they did not know me personally I never took it personally although I must admit I would have preferred had they been supportive. I give my critics full credit for having delayed the full introduction of orthomolecular medicine into the medical world and for having denied life, health and happiness for innumerable patients. Supporters of old paradigms never realize how much damage they do by their remarkable rigidity and adherence to old theories.

Andrew W. Saul, M.S., Ph.D., is editor-in-chief of the Orthomolecular Medicine NewsService and is on the editorial board of the Journal of Orthomolecular Medicine. Has published more than 180 peer-reviewed articles and has written or coauthored 12 books.

NIACIN'S MIRACULOUS PROPERTIES
By Amazon Customer
I bought this book more out of curiosity than out of any idea that niacin could make a difference in my life. After reading through the refreshing prose for a while, I was inspired to try some instant niacin myself. The proof, after all, is in the pudding. Was I surprised!

On 600 mg instant niacin a day:

(a) I could suddenly sleep well 7 hours a night (I was taking 300 micrograms melatonin at night which I no longer needed);
(b) Besides going as red as a beet when I took my first two 100 mg tablets, I noticed an immediate boost in mood; yes, niacin often makes me feel high. (I am someone who never drinks or takes drugs.)
(c) My joint pains and muscle pains, which I had for years, went away overnight, almost completely.
(d) I had so much more energy, which remains steady through each day (I was taking carnitine, which I no longer need.)
(e) I had a very unpleasant, painful, protruding pile which had lasted for more than a month, before I began taking niacin. Within 3 days my pile had shrunk, I could hardly feel any lump and the muscle tone in that area felt much better. I haven't had any problems with piles in the 6 months I have been taking niacin, no matter how much I push.
(f) On a gram of slow release niacin, taken in addition to the 600 mg fast niacin a day, my LDL dropped from 5.6 to 3.0 in two weeks. My HDL went from 1.31 to 1.68.

The book is not merely about the many benefits of niacin, but is the story of niacin, of how Dr. Hoffer first came to use it on many of his patients. It is also, in a very real sense, the story of Dr. Hoffer himself, and what a wonderful, inspiring story it is!

According to this book, about 50% of all people in the world can benefit from taking niacin every day. I am clearly one of them. Curiously, the opposite seems to be true for my wife: for one, it aggravated her piles overnight, causing them to flare up painfully, and she experienced no subjective benefits. It is therefore a question of each person must try for himself / herself and closely monitor what they experience. There is a bit of jargon that apparently explains this: under-methylation (me); over-methylation (my wife.)

The only downsides I experienced (I do not see the itching, burning sensation on the skin and the hot flashes which sometimes arise, as such) is that it seemed to aggravate my sinusitis. However, I was able to counteract this effect effectively with curcumin and msm. Further, if taken directly before switching off the light at night, I tended to experienced arythmias (irregular heart beat) while waiting to fall asleep or on waking during the night. So now I take 200 mg about an hour before I switch off the night light, which makes all the difference.

One area the book does not effectively or safely address, which is a bit of a bummer, is clear directions on the use of slow niacin. Reading this book, one can be forgiven for thinking that it would be safe to take 3 grams of slow release niacin a day, instead of 3 grams of fast release niacin, although this book almost exclusively recommends the latter. However, it is in fact quite unsafe to take 3 grams of slow release niacin a day, for every 500 mg of slow release niacin is the equivalent of 1 gram of fast niacin in its effect on the liver. Thus, if you want to substitute slow release niacin for 3 grams of instant niacin, you should take no more than 1.5 grams of slow release niacin a day. This does not mean you will experience exactly the same effect/ benefit if you do. In my case, I find that a gram of slow release niacin (which is the equivalent of two grams of fast niacin) and up to a gram of fast niacin a day produces the best synergy of benefits in me, with each enhancing the other.

This book also recommends inositol hexanicotinate (it says you need to take twice as much as the instant niacin to get the same benefit). I guess the good doctor and Andrew Saul speak from their experience. However, I haven't found this product to be effective at all, and there is mounting evidence that inositol hexanicotinate is not very bio-available.

Besides for these few complaints about the value of this book, I highly recommend it, even if you are not wondering how effective niacin might be for you, and whether you should take it or not. it is written in refreshing, easy to follow, non-jargon prose and if you read it, you will know more about niacin than most medical doctors do.

For lowering cholesterol, 1.5 grams of slow release niacin a day is best, or take a gram of slow release niacin and up to a gram of fast release niacin per day. If you are thinking primarily of your cholesterol, "Cholesterol Control Without Diet! The Niacin Solution" by Dr. William B Parsons Jr. would be more up your alley. However, the latter is not nearly as exciting a read as the current read.

I highly recommend "Niacin - The Real Story".

I cannot praise it enough.
By Will Strong
How do I adequately praise the work of these scientists and doctors? I bought this book in a effort to help my teenage daughter with a catalogue of health and emotional issues. She had suffered from C. dificil as a small child due to multiple antibiotic allergies. At 15, she had cystic acne, rosacea, insomnia, severe adversarial behavior, and menstrual irregularities. We have been to acupuncturists, naturopaths, and conventional doctors. One day into megadosing niacin and she stopped being offended at the drop of a hat, walked around singing with her brother, and stopped obsessively checking her skin in a mirror. Two days into dosing, she reported better concentration, social interactions at school, AND THE ACNE ON HER BACK IS 50% BETTER. Yesterday, I started giving her Dr. Ruth Harrell's dosages of nutrients for learning disabled kids plus the niacin. This morning at eight a.m., all of the acne on her back is healed, her face is 35% better, and she slept.

All of this suffering because she had global subclinical malnutrition. It cannot be done with diet alone. We eat a no sugar, low carb, organic, low dairy paleo diet.

Good book with a couple of reservations
By Edward Terry
I've been taking niacin for 11 years and have performed extensive research on it. The authors do make some claims which seem a bit exaggerated with respect to some of the properties of niacin, but they do a good job of explaining its multiple effects. Forty years ago, before the advent of statins, niacin was the mainstay of lipid management. Unfortunately, niacin has recently been given a bad rap according to badly designed studies (e.g. AIM-HIGH).

Personally, although I did try the combination of niacin and simvastatin for 6 months, I've relied on niacin and proper diet to improve my cardiovascular parameters. I've managed to decrease my calcium score by 14% per year and I'm the only male in my family to not have a stroke or heart attack by the age of 50 (I'm 57 now).

One aspect of niacin which the author's experience and mine differ significantly is the niacin flush. The authors claim that it rapidly decreases, but in my case, the flushing only got significantly better after 4 to 5 years of continuous use (I use the immediate release form). The flushing is mediated by two distinct pathways. The flushing caused by the production of PGD2 can be lessed with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories such as aspirin, naproxen sodium, etc. The other pathway is mediated by the release of serotonin from platelets, which is much more difficult to counter. I've read that either Thorazine or Haldol helps with the flushing from that pathway. Great. Flushing is reduced as long as niacin is taken every day, with very few missing doses. The authors do mention three times a day dosing, but every time I took it three times a day, I experienced elevated liver enzymes, which is an indication of liver damage. On the other hand, taking the immediate-relase form twice daily has never caused a problem.

With niacin and the proper diet, I've increased my HDL from 30 to 70, dropped my LDL to 100 and halved my triglycerides.

About the Author

Alvin took the circuitous route to software development. He managed to get a degree in Aerospace Engineering from Texas A&M University, while all he was really trying to do was play baseball. Once he became a practicing engineer, he realized he liked software and programming more than engineering. So in approximate order he taught himself Fortran, C, Unix and network administration, sed, awk, Perl, Java, Python, Ruby, JRuby, Groovy, PHP, and Scala. During this process he started a software consulting firm, grew it to fifteen people, sold it, and moved to Alaska for a few years. After returning to the “Lower 48,” he self-published two books (“How I Sold My Business: A Personal Diary”, and “Zen and the Art of Consulting”). He also created devdaily.com, which receives millions of page views every year, and started a new software consulting business, Valley Programming.

Best Scala Book by far in a Group of MANY Outstanding...
By Let's Compare Options Preptorial
"If new programmers have time to learn only one language this year, it should be Scala." That's a quote from a top MIT engineer and professor and Google employee, from a conference I attended on "Most likely successors to JAVA." Say what? I'm a roboticist and engineer, and to look absolutely idiotic, I'd never even HEARD of Scala until that moment!

But I HAD heard of LISP, Haskell, C#, Java and my beloved Python. Little did I realize before the conference (3 years ago) that Scala actually COMBINES the best of all those, runs on the Java JVM, uses tools like Ant seamlessly, and has non-glue access to ALL the Java libraries.

But that's just the beginning. Scala is niether purely functional nor purely imperative, is static typed, yet works wonderfully in my real time robotics applications. Unlike even C#, let alone Java, you can do "quick" object compile commands without statics or class declarations, just like a script! You can access the JVM compiler, or .net. or scala's own interpreter, depending on your need. WOW. Scala has the functional bennies of pattern matching, macros, currying, tail recursion, immutability, algebraic types, lazy evaluation, pattern matching and many more; fixes the non unified type and type erasure as well as checked exceptions problems in Java (and many others); Scala has a unified type system (like C#) unlike Java, even though it is Java seamless!

So what do all these wonderful things have to do with this gem of a book? Easy: what good is a book if it just rehashes the Java features and misses the unique wonders of Scala? THIS TEXT DELIVERS! By that I mean it gives examples of ALL the differences, in English and code, that make this language a winner among winners.

At over 700 pages, you can frame this amazing book as a learning text, a reference, a cookbook, an encyclopedia, and for sure a valued friend for the library of every Java and C# jock. Because of parallel, concurrency and run time features (dear to the heart of roboticists, circuit folks like me), I believe that this text gives powerful evidence that Scala could not only be the next Java, but next C in circuits, Erlang in parallel (Early Scala used the Actor model, but that is being phased out for AKKA in the next few releases), and Lisp in functional!

You don't need to know Scala to benefit from this book, and in fact you CAN LEARN Scala just as well with this book as any of the intro Scala texts, and save yourself a ton of money and duplication, BUT like those many fine intro texts, you still have to understand basic OOP/ functional or both (in other words use it to learn your soon to be favorite language, but not to learn basic programming). In other words, if classes, functions, types, recursion, objects etc. still confuse you, this isn't the place to start. Another cool thing about both this text and Scala is that they get rid of the very silly "never use go to" that was supposedly the hallmark of imperative, and cut through all that baloney (can you say jump statements?) with very clear and simple switch and other alternatives. Both day to day coders like myself will love this cookbook, as well as "purists" who look down their noses at Java itself due to Prolog or Lisp. THIS TEXT AND THIS LANGUAGE truly blend all the best features of both worlds!

Highly recommended for coders of all skills, even advanced pros, and of course oddballs like me who are more into circuits, embedded and run - real time monsters, robotics, etc. If you're just getting out of High School and are considering which language to get started with, I'm not trashing Java (and still LOVE Lisp and Python), but I've got to say I wish I'd read this text when making those decisions! Due to being an O'reilly tome, the code also is relatively bulletproof and most of the snippets I tried ran flawlessly, but out of nearly 1,000 yummy pieces of this pie, I've only tried about 100, so take it in that context. Most authors (including this text) don't consider Scala a good language to use to "learn basic programming" -- but also concede that since Twitter, Netflix and LinkedIn run on it (among many others) it IS worth eventually learning.

ROBOTICIST/ INVENTOR EMAILER ANSWER: YES, I do think this also could be a C or C++ successor, including in embedded. Surely not as a "spice" circuit compiler, but more for very large, data intensive applications just as when you move from Arduino schemes to Linux as you evolve. If I were Apple, I'd be eyeing it in lieu of C++ right now. I mean, think about it, both .net and JVM are used in embedded bricks today. One of our most complex, 60 degrees of freedom pick and pack machines includes the JVM. There are Haskell and Scheme solutions that would make the Java used MUCH better, and Scala allows that "big data," parallel combination to happen ON the JVM, while adding the wonderfully robust Matlab/simulink like libraries of functional CAS approaches, and soon, AKKA.

Truly next decade's language in my opinion, granted after only using it for a few years (remember, fully stable versions are still coming out as this review is being written! If you're a patent type or circuit/ software developer, N.B.). If you also think the relatively new Oracle/Sun thing might mean bye bye Java innovation... well, here's a place to turn! We get a lot of requests to review books, and there seems to be a new Scala book coming out every month, so if that's any indication, here's a language that looks like a clear frontrunner for the Java throne.

Great Practical Reference
By Misja Alma
This is a great book for when you know a little bit Scala already, but you're looking for some best practices and practical solutions when building an application.
The book is more of a reference manual than a reading book. It consists of a large number of practical problems and their solutions. But what I liked is that for every topic there is not only a solution, but also a paragraph called 'discussion' which goes a little deeper into the subject.

One could wonder why one would need such a book if you could just Google your question and find the answers on the Internet. But the trouble with that approach is that, in particular for Scala, for each problem there are many possible ways to solve it. And some of them might not be good practice, might be deprecated or just plain wrong.
This book gives solid answers, teaches about best practices and tries to tell you where to apply to solution and where not.

Fantastic!
By Ahmad
Excellent book. Best if you're a bit familiar with Scala & have done a little bit of work with it. This is not a teach yourself Scala book but it didn't start out advanced either. Couldn't be happier with it.

-- Update --
This book is a true gem and continues to impress. I find myself sometimes searching for something online only to find it full with examples and well documented code/practices in this fantastic book which is now an indispensable reference. Hats off to the author.
