Dinosaur bones and the people who covet them take center stage in Hickam's uncharacteristically bland latest, which plays out in Montana, where hardworking ranchers are hemmed in by the Bureau of Land Management, ecoterrorists, and neighbors with a bunker mentality. Retired L.A. homicide detective Mike Wire is now the foreman of the Square C Ranch, where the widowed owner, Jeanette Coulter, is the steely, unobtainable object of his affection. After paleontologist Dr. Norman "Pick" Pickford works out a deal to dig for fossils on Jeanette's property, Mike assists Pick's team, among whom is a sexy Russian Mike soon begins an affair with. Soon after Pick happens on a discovery that could prove to be revolutionary, a menacing visitor is murdered and Mike realizes that the fossils may be worth killing for. Unfortunately, it takes a very long time for the mystery to kick in, and Hickam (Rocket Boys) reserves all the action for the story's climax. In the end, the science fascinates more than the characters or the leisurely plot. (Nov.) (c)

Great action packed murder mystery,love,cowboys cowgirls and digging up dino bones. Learn some Paleontology too!

Met Homer Hickam Jr at the 2011 Mars society convention in Grape Vine Texas. He was a guest speaker. I instantly liked him ... a real down to Earth guy.I bought and read his Torpedo Junction book...5 stars...see my review. I took a Paleontology course and wrote a paper on the evolution of the horse and have fossil collected in the Peace river Fl., finding many fossilized shark teeth and mammal fossilized bones. Donated my shark teeth collection to The Natural Museum of History ( Sweden) in Stockholm. So it was with great interest I bought The Dinosaur Hunter.

Homer Hickam has wrote a great book. Action packed from beginning to end. I couldn't put it down. Its a page burner 311 pages I read in 2/3s of a day. Remember this is a fictional novel so the "facts" discovered about the nest guarding instincts of the "T Rex", etc. are only supposition and have not been proven. Just go with the flow with this book. Don't try to analyze it; just enjoy it.

Homer is superb with character development. You really get to know the characters and how they think. You empathize with them. The book has a great plot. What could be better...Dino bone hunting,cowboys and cowgirls, a murder, a little sex thrown in ...nothing vulgar or graphic, plus the reader gets a chance to learn a little Paleontology.

I got to empathize so much with the characters I almost shed a tear when the main character Mike sees his girl friend and possible future soul mate Tanya murdered by a Russian mob thug by a bullet to the head with Mike watching.The Russian mob thugs are coming to steal the dinosaur bones and will kill all witnesses. Again great action, character development and a superb plot. A good mystery who done it about the cow killings and first murder of a Russian mob thug,too.

Enjoyed this book so much, I bought Rocket Boys and the October Skies DVD, and more books by Homer Hickam Jr. Will review. The Dinosaur Hunter, a great action packed novel with a little Paleontology to learn too! 5 stars

The Dinosaur Hunter

Forget about "Mama Grizzlies" - it's Mama T-Rex who really rules! I just finished Homer Hickam's "The Dinosaur Hunter," and found the book as exciting and rewarding as I hoped it would be. With this novel Hickam, who in past lives has - among numerous other occupations - trained NASA astronauts how to scuba, and has written about going Back to the Moon: A Novel - has traded his diving flippers for cowboy boots, and deep space for "deep time." In addition, and not surprisingly, Hickam proves to be as skillful at portraying the world of dino-diggers in Montana as he is taking us into the coal mines of West Virginia. A sort of comic mystery, thriller, action-love story, the novel moves along at a quick-fire pace that kept me engrossed from beginning to end. Hickam also creates a cadre of characters that are as layered and diverse as the geologic strata where the novel is set. There is Pick, the paleontologist who moves from the Cretaceous through the Quatenary periods with ease, but can't seem to find his way back to camp; Ray and Amelia, the squabbling teenagers-in-love; Brian and Philip, the Green Planet brothers who learn to love the earth in a way they didn't think possible; Cade, the Hollywood porn-producer cum nouveau-riche rancher; Toby, the Hawaiian-shirt-wearing Russian mobster; and the protagonist, Mike - the ex-LA detective turned ranch manager, who doesn't have a clue when it comes to women. And what women! I've not met such capable and courageous, independent and intense, resourceful and resilient, women since Ellen Ripley, especially Jeanette, owner of the Square C ranch where Mike works. The strong, silent type; when she does talk, you know she means it. In fact, all the heroes of the story, based on people Hickam came to know and admire while researching the novel, are as tough and tenacious as the Montana they are trying to measure up to. My only beef? The novel is too short! In the words of Oliver Twist: "More, please!"

I love Homer's books

I love Homer's books. I began buying and reading his books because my husband and I both graduated from Big Creek High School (that's the school in the Rocket Boys book/October Sky movie) just ahead of him, then I continued to buy them because they are such excellent reads. Of course our favorites are that trilogy. Sure wish they'd make a movie of The Coalwood Way. His books make such excellent gifts. Back to The Dinosaur Hunter, while enjoying a unique story, upon finishing the book you find you have learned so much about paleontology, bone digs and preservation without realizing it while you were reading the book. It is wonderful when an author can teach through an entertaining work of fiction. This is a book you'll not easily put down once you've started it.

Very good resource

Very good resource, this was a mandatory buy for a theory class on the older adult (MSN FNP program). We had two mandatory books to buy for this course and I preferred the other text for how the information is organized but I used this every week for writing papers and presentations. Because our exams were so heavily dependent on information from the text, I purchased a downloadable book from another website (not Amazon) and it would not download and the site would not refund my money. Medscape and Epocrates have more current information, this being printed in 2013, but I still found the information very valuable.

GREAT book for my new job...I've been an NP to college students and in urgent care, but this is the first time I've been a nurse practitioner for a geriatric house call practice and this book is perfect. I am really enjoying the format, the timely and research backed treatment protocols and the compassionate, well written style for advising anyone in the business of taking care of old folks! (which I am rapidly become one of!)
This is a must-read for all medical people but is especially suited to a Geriatric NP or Family Practice NP who see elderly patients regularly.

Prolific author Apple (curriculum and instruction, education policy studies, Univ. of Wisconsin, Madison) has recently been awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award by the American Educational Research Association as well as a UCLA Medal for outstanding achievement in education. His latest assault on the political right targets many of the same conservative movements that he fired on in Official Knowledge: Democratic Education in a Conservative Age (Routledge, 1993. o.p.). Here he explains how and why right-wing groups have become so powerful in recent years, warning that U.S. public education is endangered by rightist thinking. Apple argues passionately against vouchers, national curricula, standardized testing, and other misguided notions of reform and contends that "authoritarian populist" proposals will exacerbate inequality in and among our schools. He urges readers to affirm a more democratic education system. Extensive notes and bibliographical references support his provocative arguments. Highly recommended for academic and public libraries. only way to understand modern "education reform"

I was introduced this book in 2002 in a college course, and it lays out so much of the pieces that have led us to the current state of education reform. I am always surprised when people have not read this book. It is a MUST READ for people interested in the current charter school, voucher, and privatization schemes attacking public education.

Solutions from Apple

I found this book most helpful in the way that Apple outlines and discusses some of the inherent contradictions of the current Right-wing coalition. That said, one of the critiques I see here from other reviewers is the same one that came up in a class where we all read this book: Apple does not offer solutions. I think there could certainly be a discussion about the extent to which his solutions are viable or are clearly articulated, but nevertheless, he DOES offer solutions.

As I read the final chapters I made note of implicit and explicit solutions that Apple does suggest to fight NCLB and other education policies that favor the Right-wing agenda. I think some are better than others. Here they are as I see them:

1) "Repostioning" -a solution that suggests policy makers should see reforms from the eyes of those most oppressed(p. 197)

2) A strong recognition that schools and schooling are a political battlefield (p. 198, 199)

3) Placing race at the fore of all educational reform discussions. He seems to divide it into two approaches. On p. 204 he says we, as a nation, need to confront the white supremecist sins of our past (e.g.Genocide against Native Americans and enslavement of Africans) and then on p. 207 we need to confront white privlege and to make "whiteness strange".

4)Do a better job publicizing good research that supports progressive notions, theories, and experiences about what good teaching is(p. 202).

5) In keeping with #4 above, he says that progressive leaders in ed reform need to do a better job with publicity. For instance, progressive academics like Apple can go on radio talk shows, write op-ed pieces, letters to editors of newspapers, Blog more, etc)

6) Find ways to connect educational efforts to local communities

(p.219). Apple does not elaborate or give us any examples regarding this idea.

7) Give marginalized voices a real voice in deliberations about ed. policy(p. 219). This might be what he meansby "repositioning"

but since he does not elaborate or give examples its hard to tell for sure.

8) Provide some space in schools for religion. I thought this one was interesting and showed some courage and willingness to compromise with the Christian Right. Of course, he stressed much caution in getting into bed with evangelicals (p. 221)

9) Exploit the inherent tensions and contradictions between the

four groups that make up the Right Coalition. One way to do this, according to Apple, is for progressive groups to form their own tactical alliances with groups they might not otherwise share interests with (p. 223)

10)Don't allow the Right to dominate discourse or planning

of charter schools. Apple recongnizes that charter schools aren't going anywhere so progressives must be active in building charter schools or they will be left out/behind. (p.226)

A lot of facts, a sharp critique!

In the last two decades we have been witnessing a wave of "reform" in education. The discourse behind these reforms is one that says that there is only one correct way of educating: the "Right" way. Michael Apple's book is extremely important because it maps out the efforts of the conservative modernization movement in converting their ideology in common sense and thus making their ideology the legitimate one, the one that makes sense. With a sophisticated theoretical framework and a plethora of concrete examples, Apple shows how the conservative reforms are in fact a struggle to constitute a particular view into official knowledge and to make other views of society not plausible. This is a book that will interest everyone who is involved in the field of education or social sciences.

A Solid Starship Adventure Story

What I would have liked to know before I bought this book.

(Minor Spoiler Warning)

1. What type of book is it: adventure, action, drama, etc? Initially I thought it would be a military sci-fi space opera. It is not. This is a sci-fi space adventure.

2. What is the story about, in general? The story is about the difficulties Agent Maddox and his team face as they search for a legendary ship that might have the technology to give humanity a fighting chance against the unstoppable New Men.

3. What/Who is the target audience? Teenagers and young adults seem to be the target audience. There is something for adults as well, but not much. On top of that, those that like space-adventures might find the book enjoyable.

4. How is the proofreading? It is pretty good. I saw only two errors and I think they were more kindle format problems than actual editing and proofreading mistakes.

5. Is there character development? Yes and no.

Romance wise, this volume leaves a lot to be desired. Any romance was abrupt, badly implemented and uninteresting. There was no build up to it. There was no growth. It felt very superfluous.

On other character aspects, I am well satisfied. None of the protagonists are automatically perfect. They have serious emotional issues, insecurities, desires, crippling faults and manias. The development of trust between the protagonists follows an impressively realistic timeline of character evolution steps. In short, character development gets its due in this book. It is not perfect (because nothing is), but better than a lot of attempts I've read.

Antagonists are incredibly one dimensional and illogical. They are immensely powerful, but don't use their abilities effectively throughout the story. Also, their dialogue is remarkably dull.

6. Are the characters likable? The characters, as individuals, are more interesting than they are likable. I couldn't quite empathize with any of them. I did enjoy that most of them are three dimensional. They have good points and bad points. They have physical characteristics that set them apart and which speak about their origins and dispositions. They have certain mentalities that are specific to the character in question. Some of the characters have particular speech patterns that allow you to identify who is talking without having identifiers. That's very well done.

As part of a group, the characters are very interesting. Story character synergy flowed well. With the exception of romance, character conflicts were very believable. Sometimes they got a little too wordy, but not particularly uninteresting.

7. Does the story keep its pacing? The story keeps its pacing for a lot of the read. It rushes like a runaway train at the end and at some other story points. It's like, pacing wise, everything goes well for 95 percent of the book. The remaining five percent is not merely `off pace' from the rhythm the author established, but ridiculously `off pace'.

8. Do you have to suspend disbelief? Well, you're going to have to decide if my logic is faulty or not.

The enemy has been created far too powerful for it to be held back by human capabilities and numbers. I think the author went much too overboard on this.

The antagonists in this book can: subvert human warships and plant them AT EARTH, have infiltrated the highest levels of critical agencies on the planet (including Fleet and Intelligence), control vast wealth within human space, have sensors that can track the tiniest ships in a vast galaxy, have enough influence to manipulate critical components of Earth defenses on a whim, are ruthless and intelligent, have many warships (not as many as humans but given the differences in capabilities...) and are physically superior in every way. Imagine Khan, from Star Trek, multiplied by a billion, immensely rich, with a vast intelligence network and with Borg or Fluid Space alien technology.

Considering all of this, there is absolutely no reasonable way that the protagonists should win. Earth has no advantages it can exploit that might hold the New Men back. Reasonably speaking, human space should have fallen to the New Men before the protagonist's mission was complete.

Why don't the New Men cleanse humanity? No reason. That's it. We can speculate about it, but we don't know.

9. Is the book worth the asking price? I paid $3. That's smack in the middle of a standard ebook price and fairly cheap.

In conclusion: This is a sci-fi adventure that requires significant suspension of disbelief. The antagonists are incredibly overwhelming in their capabilities and similarly underwhelming in their use of said capabilities. This is contradicting and unreasonable given what we learn about them. The protagonists are pleasantly three dimensional and feel quite real except for the clumsy romance attempts. The pacing is pretty quick and engrossing, with an artistic thinner thread of hope as the story develops. At times, though, pacing is abandoned and the story timeline leaps forward, glossing over battles and engagements. Some readers will not enjoy those abrupt leaps. The proofreading is above average and well done. The price is great at $3. If you look for flaws you'll find them, but at the same time the reader might find a generally fun read with interesting characters. This is a solid book.

The Lost Opportunity

Lost Starship is riddled with typos, poorly constructed sentences, strange punctuation and general basic errors. Sadly, this has become fairly forgivable in this Internet infested age.

More damning, however, the tale is poorly told. There are rules for these sorts of stories and Lost Starship breaks every one of them in the worst possible way. The characters are flat with superficial imperfections that only act as benefits (the main character is a half-breed that makes him...stronger, smarter and faster than every other human. What a burden!). The characters are merely pawns to the plot, acting in ways that are inexplicable except that they happen to service the story. Dialogue is stilted. Everyone speaks robotically.

The author also spends a good amount of time justifying his own plot holes then contradicting the very rules he spent a good amount of time establishing. There aren't twists, just inexplicable plot turns. Challenges appear illogically and are solved only with a wave of the magic plot wand. The book is a mess that could have used a few critiquing groups and probably several re-drafts.

Yet the bones of the story are solid. There's nothing new here, but stories are told over and over because they're good ones. Almost despite himself the author creates an interesting conflict that should have been so much more than it was. If I told you a spy, a clone thief, a drunk, and a disgraced war hero were going to escape a prison planet and hijack a legendary spaceship to fight all-powerful beings you'd think "wow, great story!"

Sadly, not so much.

An Interesting Story Ruined by Poor Writing

The premise of this book was somewhat interesting, but it was completely ruined by the execution and the shallow characters. The book was absolutely filled with grammatical errors and super-annoying complex sentences. It's never "Maddox punched her bare stomach with his left hand," it's always, "with his left hand, Maddox punched her bare stomach." The writing style was so annoying I had to struggle not to just give up reading the book and put it down for good. As it was, I could only get through 60% of the story before finally deciding that knowing how it ends would not be worth slogging through the clumsy writing.

The prose itself is also just boring and and commonplace. You read sentences like "Meta head-butted him, and if her forehead had connected with his nose, the fight would have been over." An author writing at a higher level would have made this more exciting, perhaps writing that "Meta snapped her forehead into his face, missing his nose by a fraction of an inch. Maddox was momentarily stunned by the force of the blow and he realized that if her strike had hit home he would have lost the fight."

It appears that the author has written quite a few novels and stories, but it still seems that he could benefit from more practice and a lot more reading. The editor absolutely dropped the ball on this one.
