About the Author

Michael Sullivan, Emeritus Professor of Mathematics at Chicago State University, received a Ph.D. in mathematics from the Illinois Institute of Technology. Mike taught at Chicago State for 35 years before recently retiring. He is a native of Chicago’s South Side and divides his time between a home in Oak Lawn IL and a condo in Naples FL.

 

Mike is a member of the American Mathematical Society and the Mathematical Association of America. He is a past president of the Text and Academic Authors Association and is currently Treasurer of its Foundation. He is a member of the TAA Council of Fellows and was awarded the TAA Mike Keedy award in 1997 and the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007. In addition, he represents TAA on the Authors Coalition of America.

 

Mike has been writing textbooks for more than 35 years and currently has 15 books in print, twelve with Pearson Education. When not writing, he enjoys tennis, golf, gardening, and travel.

 

Mike has four children: Kathleen, who teaches college mathematics; Michael III, who also teaches college mathematics, and who is his coauthor on two precalculus series; Dan, who is a sales director for Pearson Education; and Colleen, who teaches middle-school and secondary school mathematics. Twelve grandchildren round out the family.

An excellent textbook

The item arrived overall in very good shape. The cover was somewhat discolored and had a few scratches, but the physical pages were perfect. As for the quality of the textbook material, this is the best textbook I have read for covering the necessary math needed for higher level mathematics. The information in this book is even slightly more detailed than what is present in the Precalculus edition, but it is, of course, missing the introduction to limit theory which can always be covered later in an actual Calculus textbook. The information is thorough and concise, and for this reason, if you are someone who likes to study privately and learn by yourself, this is an excellent textbook to get started with.

I used this book for my Fall 2015 class. It came with the access card needed for class. The book was just and updated version of previous versions with some math problems changed and format changes. I still had to use youtube and other resources to help me solve problems the even problems that did not have example of how to solve in the textbook.

Access codes by this publisher is a scam

I bought this book for a class that required the book and the access code for the online class. I bought it new thinking
that the access code would be valid. Unfortunately the access code did not work. After waiting for an hour to speak with
Pearson's representative, he double checked the code, told me it was a valid code, we spent another 25 minutes going over everything on the phone and
then he said he was going to send me an email with instructions on how to replace the code. I asked him to make sure if the new code was going to work and he said yes. Well, the email he sent me was to say that Pearson does not replace access code when the book is purchased outside
the university or college that the book is intended for. In other words, they don't replace codes for books purchased through Amazon.
All that time wasted and being duped by this agent by the fake name of "Dave" who is really answering the phone from India.
Pearson is doing a scam with these access codes and probably the universities are in cahoots with them. The only trustworthy and honorable company here is Amazon who refunded the money right away. I'm sorry to say but don't buy this book from Amazon, you might run into the same problem, even though it's not their fault.

The best introduction to this complex field available. Extremely well-written, lucid, and compelling. Would serve as a great text for classroom use, but is engaging enough to be read in a weekend. Robbins does an excellent job of weaving together different philosophical and scientific currents into a valuable resource for a variety of scholars.

About the Author
Rebecca M. Warner received a B.A. from Carnegie-Mellon University in Social Relations in 1973 and a Ph.D. in Social Psychology from Harvard in 1978. She has taught statistics for more than 25 years: from Introductory and Intermediate Statistics to advanced topics seminars in Multivariate Statistics, Structural Equation Modeling, and Time Series Analysis. She is currently a Full Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of New Hampshire. She is a Fellow in the Association for Psychological Science and a member of the American Psychological Association, the International Association for Relationships Research, the Society of Experimental Social Psychology, and the Society for Personality and Social Psychology. She has consulted on statistics and data management for the World Health Organization in Geneva and served as a visiting faculty member at Shandong Medical University in China.

Highly recommend

I am a research specialist for an online graduate school and we are in the process of adopting this book for our students. It really is the most comprehensive, user-friendly text on the market. Actually, this book is extremely helpful for graduate students as well as those of us who have already graduated :-) I think statistics is similar to a foreign language: use it or lose it. Of course I'll probably always remember "donde esta el bano?", just like I remember t-tests, correlations, ANOVA, regression, etc. However, the water can get murky when it comes to power analyses in certain situations, moderation/mediation, differences between discriminant analysis and binary logistic regression, and other complicated or less used tests. Warner's text is an excellent, user-friendly resource in such situations as well as when my doctoral students have random questions about their analyses. She provides relatable examples, professional write-ups, and helpful SPSS screenshots. I would highly recommend this text!

Outstanding for univariate methods, good for multivariate methods.

This was my textbook for a series of 4 intermediate to advanced statistics courses in my Ph.D program. For univariate and bivariate methods, the book is outstanding with each chapter well written and easy to follow. Each chapter first walks you through the theory of the method, then you get a logical tour of the assumptions, maths and relevant equations, followed by exemplars, and finally an SPSS analysis. The coverage is deep with a focus on application over theoretical development, which is perfect for those who will depend on these statistical tools in their dissertations and research.

Where the text starts to fall short, in my opinion, is in its coverage of multivariate methods. Here the chapters are more cryptic and difficult to follow and the logic sometimes counterintuitive and hard to follow. The multivariate chapters appeared to struggle to identify the key elements of each analysis and left me often confused. Worked examples were also harder to follow. What I and many of my fellow students in the multivariate courses did was supplement this text with Tabachnick & Fidell, which is exclusively devoted to multivariate statistics and the text of choice for those methods. It does a much better job of explaining multivariate methods than Warner. Field is also another excellent supplement to both these texts. Overall, however, Warner is a great textbook.

This is a great book with nice instructions for SPSS and nice examples of SPSS outputs. Its a bit long-winded, but what textbook isn't? Oh, and the appendices in the back are extremely useful...and page 208 for effect size charts.

Best book of strategies I have found for learning a new language!

I picked up about 16 strategies from this book which I use on a daily basis. There is nothing in this book that you could not go find on your own if you had the time and patients; however, Judith did the research already, provided URL's and contact information whenever possible, so use it. The book is concise, the author doesn't fill each page with padding to give the appearance of a larger book (sorry, I have found other books like this to be about filling pages regardless of content). If you have already done personal research on how to learn a language this book might not be as useful to you, but to all others who have started to learn a language and asked themselves, 'now what?' this book will help!

Awesome book, highly recommend it

This may be the best 3$ i spent since a while. Excellent book with so many resources to learn German. The best thing is that the author explains the points of strength and weakness of each resource. Also, categorizing resources to fit in the four core parts of any language is really awesome. If you want to improve any skill just open its chapter. In addition, i know a lot of resources for learning languages, but this book surprised me with lots of useful resources i never heard of. If you want to learn German for free but don't know where to start, i highly recommend this book.

This book is Great. It is filled with so many tips and free sites. I never knew there were so many free resources out there (not only online, but offline) With this many resources available to me, I should be speaking German in no time. This book is broken down into many wonderful topics, my favorite is "improve your vocabulary". This author gives such wonderful tips. Sehr zu empfehlen(Highly recommend). Great job and now I'm going to go purchase this authors other book, "72 ways to Learn French," so I can master that one too.

About the Author
Robert A. Beeler is an Associate Professor of Mathematics at East Tennessee State University. His research interests include enumerative combinatorics and graph theory; edge decompositions of graphs, graceful labelings on graphs, intersection/representation theory, and combinatorial designs; combinatorial games and games on graphs. He is a member of the Mathematics Association of America, the American Mathematical Society, and the Institute of Combinatorics and its Applications.
