About the Author
György Doczi practiced architecture in Hungary, Sweden, Iran, and the United States. He initiated a permanent exhibit on form in nature and art at the Pacific Science Center in Seattle, and was a founder of the Friends of Jungian Psychology Northwest. He died in 1995.

one of my best books ever

This book is a must for anyone interested in sacred geometry. The text is superb, the illustrations 'illuminating'... fine quality line drawings, with extensive data describing the proportions found in nature. This is my fourth copy of this book, previous copies given as gifts or loaned and not returned.

I am delighted to have my BOOK back. I learn from it every time i reread it.

Oh, and don't be daunted by the complexity of the measurements; just relax and enjoy the beauty. You will see with your mind's eye the truth of the Power of Limits. ;-)

Do buy this book, but if you would like something that explains the intrinsic nature of proportion and number, I suggest Michael S Schneider's book 'A beginners Guide to Constructing the Universe'. I bought my latest copy [my second] right here at Amazon.

Michael is an intelligent, focused, enthusiatic teacher [I've attended his seminars & workshops] and his book is chocked full of easily understandable information and illustrations showing, again, the logical beautiful matrix of our wonderful world. There are drawing exercises so you can see the sacred geometry unfold before your very eys; try your hand at drawing nature's beautiful mysteries yourself!

The concept is fascinating, the delivery of material gets rather complicated when musical notes are added to this concept of Power of Limits...maybe I am just being simple...I was interested in Fine Art composition.....but I find myself going back and re reading sections.

Thompson books are enjoyable to work with and learn from

So far, so good. I am revisiting my piano studies after many years away. The original Thompson course has always been part of my studies, and this compliments those books well, with some overlap and some different materials.

Whether you are just starting out with Qt, or want to catch up on new and advanced features, this title offers an invaluable resource for readers.

The no-nonsense approach and right-on-target examples help distinguish this text. The book begins by making a case for cross-platform development. (Qt shows that Java is not the only game in town in this regard.) A later section on good GUI design and some hints for better portability help make this title a good way to learn GUI programming from the ground up.

Short, clear examples show off the basics, starting with a "Hello World" application. Emphasis is on using the Qt APIs effectively rather than getting bogged down in C++ syntax. Since GUI programming is a strength, the author covers the built-in "widgets" available in Qt in excellent detail, including fancier controls like tables and new dial components. Good, if outdated, introduction to Qt

Book starts out strong, and was helpful as an introduction for Qt. However, it seems to cut out about 350 pages in, putting subjects such as "Focus Handling" in its own 3 page chapter, rather than integrating it into an existing chapter. That said, the Portability chapter, which includes a list of Qt functions that are not portable, was a valuable addition.

Keep in mind, the 2nd edition of Programming for Qt was written for Qt 3. At the time of this review, the latest version of Qt is version 4. This is a problem because Trolltech appears to reinvent the wheel for each major version. While the author had me salivating at the thought of a QStyleSheet, checking the API docs for Qt 4 QStyleSheet is now a deprecated class, and as far as I can tell there is no current equivalent.

One aspect I wish the author had covered in more detail is the actual compiling and linking of applications that use Qt. I'm starting to get the impression that Trolltech's dirty little secret is that while their API is both clean and thorough, the signal/slot method is overly reliant on #defines, and the developer has to compile and link as many as twice the number of files to make it function. Trolltech includes a program 'qmake' almost as a bandaid which will generate Makefiles that will then automatically generate and compile the extra 'moc' files. The problem is that if you're porting an application to Qt, you're likely to have existing makefiles. Adding the additional layer of qmake and it's .pro files is both cumbersome and not actually necessary. While you can certainly figure out on your own how to avoid using qmake, it would have been helpful if the book described the functionality of the qmake-generated makefiles. This would help developers porting to Qt to include that functionality in their existing makefiles.

Needs more depth

I found this book to be clearly written, and not difficult to follow and succinct, and not sufficient to answer enough of my programming questions to feel comfortable creating my own programs. You definitely need to study the Troll Tech-provided documentation to go very far beyond the book in programming, but the documentation reads like it was written as a reference, for people who understand but simply need a reminder. The book needs about two hundred more pages explaining examples and critical subjects like slot-signal interactions, layouts and many of the widgets more completely.
This book makes a good overview, but needs more depth. At the time, it was about the only book available, so I cannot say that it was a mistake to get the book when I did. I hope that other books coming out on Qt have more depth and more complete explanations.

Still a useful learning tool.

If you want to learn Qt, you'd better start with Qt4. This book is really for Qt3, but it's still full of useful examples and information. In order to get the code in this book to work, you should #include at the top of your code, and then add "CONFIG = release", "CONFIG += qt", and "QT += qt3support" to your *.pro project file. After that was done, I had no problems with the code from this book.

I'll have some Moore!

I think this is Moore's best blues album overall. And this folio seems a fairly accurate interpretation of events. Get it and write your own 'Story Of the Blues'.

First, it seems that most of the English blues players (Clapton, Green, Taylor, etc.), favor right hand timing and execution over left hand technique. However, Gary Moore can do it all. He has both incredible right and left hand ability. This likely the result, of long experience with playing harmonic minor structured hard rock and classical themes (i.e. G Force, Coloseum, Thin Lizzy, Andrew Lloyd Weber's 'Paganinni Variations').

And while Moore stays well within a blues structure here, cuts such as 'Story Of the Blues' and 'Only Fool In Town', yield his trademark extended scalar outbursts. And such rapidity here is better seen as a product of right hand technique, rather than a product of complicated left hand fingerings. For it's by 'picking economy' and 'sweep and roll' that such blistering pentatonic passages are executed.

Take for example, the bombastic opening cadenza to Moore's 'End Of the World' (Corridors of Power/Early Years). It utilizes a complex harmonic minor scale and not a simple pentatonic blues scale. Yet on 'After Hours', Moore applies a similar style of overwhelming technique to the blues idiom, while staying totally faithful to the form. Which is so commendable, for I truly don't think a technically gifted player like say, Ying-Yang Malmsteen, could play with any true conviction in the blues. However, Moore could cut heads with Ying-Ding all day long in Em, then sit in with B.B. King that evening and play an F# 7 that'd make all of Memphis weep.

More importantly in seeking your own voice, would be to appreciate Moore's legato style and vibrato, which shows his ability to wring every bit of nuance and soul from a note. Just check out 'Jumpin' At Shadows', with its slow groove and 'dih-dah' phrasing.

Also, Moore favors Les Pauls to play the blues, while much of his hard rock stuff is played on Strats. Again, it only goes to show Moore's incredible talent; being able to make a Les Paul sound so expressive.

Added, if you can find the folio for 'The Early Years', pick it up as it is excellent. And with its transcription to 'End Of the World', you can scare all the small children and bunny rabbits in the surrounding area.

About the Author

Robert R. Faulkner is professor of sociology at the University of Massachusetts and the author of Hollywood Studio Musicians and Music on Demand: Composers and Careers in the Hollywood Film Industry. Together, with Barbara Kirshenblatt-Gimblett, they are coeditors of Art from Start to Finish: Jazz, Painting, Writing, and Other Improvisations.

Interesting but more "academic" than I would have preferred

A worthy read, especially the references to real world music jobs and jam sessions. Oftentimes however, the authors focused on academic sociological concerns as if this were a professional paper. I read this as a musician, so it did not have enough of the kind of information that I would have liked. Still, it was undeniably well written and therefore easy to read.

If you love jazz music and culture, this book is for you

I have been playing jazz music all of my life, and as an upcoming sociology Ph.D, this was an excellent read for me. It can be a bit esoteric, if you do not know too much about the field (or both fields, rather) but I still found this to be an exceptional publication by two very esteemed sociologists. Howard Becker is a legend, and it seems as if Robert Faulkner is his protege. Enjoyable for those who play, listen to, or enjoy jazz music and cultural reflections.

Could have been an interesting essay

As a Jazz fan with an interest in sociology I was a bit disappointed in this book. The area being analyzed is a fascinating one and the authors have hands on experience as Jazz musicians. The book they produced has some interest but, as presented, could have been much shorter as there is a lot of repetition and recapitulation. The authors have decided to keep the stories they base their research on as anonymous but this gives the book an anecdotal quality. You can not check the stories and it is all based on a few interviews; there is no attempt at a scientific or statistical analyses. So it fails to be a convincing sociology book and provides too little of interest to jazz fans.

Great Book

This is a very unique look at Access. I've read a bunch of Access books and this one brought some new ideas that I never read before. Using XML to to transfer date between Excel and Access is a good idea and one that I've never heard of before. Being an Access developer there are a lot of books that cover developing an Access application, while this one doesn't do that it does a very good job teaching you how best to analyze your data. Which is why I use Access in the first place. Most of us use Excel to do a lot more then it should. I think this a great book for someone who has outgrown their Excel spreadsheet and needs to move to something more manageable. It covers a lot of what you would need to know to help transition to Access as well as a lot of great tips for more experienced Access users.

excellent - I got the eBook version

Skimmed through it in one night. Will be studying this in more detail for my project. Getting it from excel point of view is great, since I know excel. Very useful...highly recommended. Got the ebook version to bypass any potential issues with the missing index, but I'm guessing that should be fixed by now.

If I hunger for hardcopy, I'll get the book later. I personally like option to have both hardcopy and electronic versions.

Easy to access.

So helpful in marrying Excel and Access. Love the visuals and examples. Don't hesitate to pierce the mystery of Access when you're a big Excel user. You'll experience the power of Access as a backend engine, at least, and increase controls when they're absent from Excel.
