The purpose of this book is to introduce algebraic topology using the novel approach of homotopy theory, an approach with clear applications in algebraic geometry as understood by Lawson and Voevodsky. This method allows the authors to cover the material more efficiently than the more common method using homological algebra. The basic concepts of homotopy theory, such as fibrations and cofibrations, are used to construct singular homology and cohomology, as well as K-theory. Throughout the text many other fundamental concepts are introduced, including the construction of the characteristic classes of vector bundles. Although functors appear constantly throughout the text, no knowledge about category theory is expected from the reader. This book is intended for advanced undergraduates and graduate students with a basic knowledge of point set topology as well as group theory and can be used in a two semester course.
Marcelo Aguilar and Carlos Prieto are Professors at the Instituto de Matemticas, Universidad Nacional Aut�noma de M�xico, and Samuel Gitler is a member of El Colegio Nacional and professor at the Centro de Investigaci�n y Estudios Avanzados del IPN.

The very BEST book on the subject

There are lots of books about mathematical modeling, and many of them cover biological systems. But no book I've ever seen even comes close to the quality of this beautiful work by Edelstein-Keshet. So what is it that makes this book so special? First of all, the book is both accessible and self-contained. Just start at the beginning, and you're guaranteed to learn A LOT of math. Second, the style of writing and the way in which the author presents the material is utterly beautiful. It is impossible NOT to understand, but the material is not at all 'chewed out' for the reader. Third of all, the book really encourages the reader to pick up pen and paper, go out there and MODEL something; dozens of inspiring and high-quality exercises and research projects are to be found throughout the book. Fourth, the various techniques are easily applied to non-biological problems. Fifth, the book will help to gain insight in the qualitative aspects of biological phenomena. What Peter Atkins is to chemistry, Edelstein-Keshet is to mathematical biology. Sadly, she is not as widely known. Get this book while you can!

This is a nice introductory book on math biology models. It is easy to understand and a necessary reading for those who want to approach more difficult books such as Mathematical Physiology. The exercises presented are useful for active learning of this topic.
Be aware: this book requires prior knowledge of calculus (differential equations, partial derivatives, Taylor series expansion...).

Classic textbook, with some flaws

A classic textbook in mathematical biology, and still one of the best I know. It is a testament to the quality of this book that many other textbooks that have been published after it essentially follow the template of this book.

No other book does a better job at explaining clearly and concisely the biological background. The tone is precise and approachable without being aloof.

There are two flaws about this book: One is the mathematical exposition, which is sometimes simply wrong. (The whole section about the Hopf bifurcation is very poor, and I couldn't use this section in classes I taught. It has to be supplemented by other textbooks.) The other, related, flaw is the flood of typos. This is the text with the most typos I've ever seen. (The latest errata list has 16 pages, and there are still many unlisted typos.) And this is the second edition! Normally typos don't bother me too much, but there are so many here that it truly becomes a nuisance.

Overall, though, this is a good textbook. I wish the author would decide to update the text and clean up the typos and some of the math sections.

A Good Reference

Linear Systems Primer serves as a very good reference at the graduate and/or professional level. The mathematics are very thorough (proofs included) in regards to linear time-invariant systems. However, I would not recommend this book as your source for explanations of the concepts or physical meaning lying behind all the math. In engineering, one often encounters what I consider as "engineering" books and "math" books. For me, this one falls under the category of math book. If you can understand concepts through other means, this book can serve as a good reference.

I used this book for graduate course on linear systems theory. The book covers all important parts of linear systems theory. All the parts are very good explained. I think the style of the book is friendly to newcomers and certainly is suitable for graduate students. Every chapter contains a lot of examples that always help understanding the theory. I really liked studying with this book and I still use it as a reference.

Hughly Academic but also Highly Useful

This critical reader provides a very deep insight into multicultural theory. It isn't beach reading. The chapters are analytical, delving into complex notions of why we might need mutlicultural perspectives and how we might benefit from them. Being a teacher, I am better able to teach multicultural literature to my high school students -- not that I could have them read excerpts from this book, but that the knowledge in it helps me approach the works and the students with a more thorough approach.

Recently I have been on the job hunt and I found one that required "strong" Access skills. I have used access, maybe even made a few wizard approved databases. Let me make this clear, I had never done any VBA coding (maybe not even heard of the benefits or even understood it). After a while on this project I realized I was in over my head, and I wanted to walk out the door. My last hope was to find books to walk me through the process. I picked Access 2003 VBA because it Said the SMART METHOD... not because I knew anything about Mike Smart. I started working through some of the excercises, and found that Mike has a way of explaining the process very very to the point. He held my attention, and basically took the fear out of the programing and just brought me to what I needed to know to get my pay check. I had a few problems along the way. I was ready to run away again, and as a last resort I emailed Mike Smart himself. He responded to my question with in 24 hours. He has been working with me to correct the issues. I could not believe it. Here I am in all alone "pretending" to be a programmer and Mike Smart himself helps me out. I have bought many books to teach myself computer skills, but this one is the best. So if you are in a hurry like I was to learn what it takes to get your pay check you better BUY this book! Mike even told me that he is writting more books. So since that is the case, buy this book and email him or post it here what you would like to see him teach "us" about next. I would like a basic everything you need to know about computer repair, maintenance, and preventative maintenance book. I would also like to see a book on Microsoft Office intagration, how to intigrate everything with real world examples. This book is what you need to stand apart on a job hunt, to prepare a database, and just keep you and your company up to date with all the benefits of Access. You might as well learn Access, Microsoft charges us enough for it, and programmers get paid well. I hope he continues to write more books, because maybe just maybe with his help I can become a real programmer... not the pretender I am right now!!

Learn Access 2003 VBA With The Smart Method

Pros - The book offers the opportunity to build an enterprise level application where it can be modified to suit individual needs. I like the fact that it takes you through an entire project so each lesson builds on the previous one, there is no disconnect. Other material teaches in pockets not correlating skills or lessons with one another, this one does an excellent job at interweaving them all.

Cons - It is advertised as a beginner's book but it immediately dives into showing you a skill once and then expecting for you to replicate it under a different scenario almost immediately. If you are not comfortable with access from a database development standpoint this can prove to be frustrating. I would recommend starting with something else like "Access VBA Programming for the absolute beginner" ISBN 1-59200-723-6.

Otherwise the book is a good all around training tool that will help you further knowledge on VBA for applications.

More programming books should be like this one

I own lots of Access books, some good and some not so good. This book is outstanding. I feel as if I am in a classroom taking a step by step course from an excellent teacher.

The only minor problem I have found is that the database that you download from the internet has a couple of minor differences from what is described in the book, but it was not a big problem. The real joy of this book is that it so clearly and easily explains what you are doing and why. I wish more books were written in this format and with such clear, informative instruction.

This book is best suited to those who know the basics of Access and want to move on to more professional programming. It's also good for people like me who know VBA programming to some extent but want a more solid foundation or wish to fill in the gaps.
