A Meaningful Masterpiece

This book is more than a masterful collection of gorgeous textiles and fascinating stories, woven into a central theme. I gave it a friend, whose family escaped from Tashkent in the 1980s. Her parents had never told their children about their past. But in keeping with the textile tradition, her mother had brought silk ikats with her to New York, expecting to make a dowry for her daughter. All the fabrics remained in tissue paper, unused. Her mother gave me one of the pieces, five yards of heavy silk ikat in brilliant colors, woven in the warp-faced "atlas" technique. The family has gathered around the book again and again. Slowly the stories of their past are coming out. My friend can't wait for her children to get old enough to visit Tashkent. Before that, they're going to visit cousins in London who attend the Bukharan synagogue. This book is planting seeds. It's not only beautiful, it's meaningful.

An Essential Guide!

Best book in years on the fascinating and complex world of Central Asian textiles. Meller's thorough study of archival sources along with her deep understanding of textile production in the region combine to make this an important contribution to the field. Her selection of photographs, both modern and vintage are also well chosen. These especially are helpful in understanding the way the textiles were made and used
The range of textiles illustrated, especially embroideries, is quite extensive. Anyone with an interest in collecting Central Asian textiles, whether in Central Asia or the west will find this book an essential guide to the vast array of examples available today.
It was both a pleasure and an education to read. Highly recommended!

The images and colors are very good and so is the variety of Uzbek and Turkman clothing and textiles.
That said, I think the book caters for the novice, somewhat like a coffee table book and is not interesting
enough for the antique textiles collectors and scholars.

About the Author

Roger Tarling is Professor of Social Research at the University of Surrey, a post he has occupied since 1996. Before that he was for 23 years a member of the Home Office Research and Planning Unit, the last six as Head of RPU. Throughout his career he has used statistical modelling in research and has had to explain statistical models and the inferences from them to research assistants, policy makers and to the students he has taught. He is a Certified Statistician of the Royal Statistical Society.

About the Author
Ivan Moscovich is an internationally known and acclaimed inventor, puzzler, and artist. He has designed award-winning toys for Mattel, Kenner, Childcraft, Ravensburger, Binary Arts, and other companies, and is the author of the MindGames series and other books. �Mr. Moscovich lives in the Netherlands.

A graduate of Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism, Ian Stewart has reported from more than 40 countries. At the age of twenty-seven, he was appointed bureau chief of UPI's South Asia bureau. He later joined the Associated Press and was named bureau chief of its West Africa bureau in 1998. He lives in Berkeley, California.

I enjoyed hearing what a man in recovery looks like, and how the woman needs healing too - so often it sounds like the guy is the only one that needs the help. The woman are left hurting and judging themselves for still hurting. This was a great book.

The book helps distance a person from their trying to fix someone else and reminds us that we can choose to live with someone else's choice but life is not about them. Take back the good person you are becoming, don't let someone else and their behavior's destroy you.

This book has been incredibly helpful to me as part of the recovery process for myself, and helping my boyfriend. I have retread this book countless times, and each time I find something new that resonates with me. This book also helped prompt me to attend a local 12 step program for spouses while my boyfriend attends his 12 step. Thank you to Rhyll for being brave enough to share her story and journey. This is what literature is about

This novel by Eduardo Lalo reminds me why I studied Literature. It reminds me that literature is supposed to represent something: the time, culture, the struggles, idiosyncrasies, ideals. Not necessarily to teach, but to show, illuminate. It is the difference between reading for mere pleasure and reading to be enlightened. With this novel Eduardo Lalo shows us what it is to be anonymous in the place that you live, be it by the force of circumstances or by your own free will. Sometimes one can't distinguish between them.
Esta novela de Eduardo Lalo me acuerda por qu� estudi� literatura. Me acuerda que la literature debe representar algo: el tiempo, la cultura, las luchas, las idiosincracias, los ideales. No para ense�ar necesariamente, sino para mostrar, iluminar. Es la diferencia entre leer por mero placer y leer para ser iluminado. Con esta novela, Eduardo Lalo nos muestra lo que es ser an�nimo en el lugar donde se vive, sea por fuerza de circumstancias o por voluntad propia. Excelente.

The books description of the city and its ambiance made me, as a native from San Juan, relive every moment described in it. The plot keeps one guessing all the time and the love story, although unusual,is handle masterly. A very enjoyable book, one that once begun cannot be put aside.
