This book is probably the most important and well researched guide to Gamification that is on the market today. If you think Gamification is about gaming stuff them you are dead wrong. It's about how your brain works and is motivated.

I interviewed Yu-kai for the Business Book Talk Podcast and his understanding and depth of knowledge kept me on the edge of my studio seat for over 45 minutes. This is probably one of the best values on Amazon today if you are a business manager, marketing expert or entrepreneur. I can't wait for his next book.

Fantastic manual.

I don't normally write reviews, but I bought this book and I absolutely adore it.

I am an educator who wanted to try to revitalize his classroom. I had bought a few books about gamification, and "Actionable Gamification" stood out fast and far. The other books I got were vague and not helpful. Chou's book gives evidence, cites sources, and lists tangible ways to gamify any project you might be working on. It reads like a how-to manual, rather than some worthlessly optimistic, airy theoretical text.

Chou begins by explaining that there are 8 useful motivating forces, or reasons anyone does anything at all; which Chou calls "Core Drives." Each chapter after this point focuses specifically on one of these forces, how you can use them to your advantage in your projects, and how, if abused, they can be a detriment to your project. He then lists several techniques for that core drive, wraps up the chapter with a thought exercise and a tie in to his website, and moves on to the next core drive.

The book is incredibly easy to understand, well paced, and fun to read. I am excited to use what I learned in this book to go make lesson plans. :)

The best money I've spent all year so far

I'm still not even all the way through but I've gained so, so much from this book. Yu-kai Chou is the absolute EXPERT on this topic and also has led an interesting life in general. His passion for gamification and how real people can use it emanates from every page, and the Octalysis framework is possibly the most interesting and detailed system I've ever read about, on any topic, ever. (And I studied physics, computer science, and business in college!)

As a marketer, copywriter, and storyteller who has basically "heard it all" in terms of psychological triggers, this book continues to astound me and help me level up (pun intended) my mastery of so many functions of my daily work—creating, selling, publishing, and more. Highly recommended.

Basic Conceptions of Physical Reality

The other reviewers have been a little excited and mistated the propositions that this book outlines.

1. Einstein never proposed a "hidden variables" theory, he was against this formulation. It was David Bohm who proposed hidden variables.

2. Einstein's ironic statement was "Does the moon disappear when I'm not looking at it?" This was stated in order to show the absurdity of the Copenhagen Interpretation of Quantum Mechanics, which states that there are no particles in the universe until scientists perform experiments; i.e. the experiments themselves 'create' reality ahead of them, creating an illusion that scientists are exploring a reality that is independent of their mental existance.

"Einstein's Moon" is an excellent summary of that small, but important, battle that occured between the realists, lead by Einstein, and the quantum nihilists, lead by Niels Bohr.

The surprising state of affairs today, summed up under the ruberic of "Bell's Inequality" has yet more surprises waiting just around the corner. This is an area of physics and philosophy that can and will produce world-changing results in the very near future.

So, "Einstein's Moon" is excellent reading for anyone who wants to be prepared for the next revolution in man's understanding of the universe!

A very important book, though not a great read.

I found the explanations of the standard modern physics subjects to be mediocre except the part about Bell's Theorem. The significance lies not in the treatment of the subject (Bell's Theorem) but in the fact that Peat has tackled the subject at all. This theorem may prove to be the most important discovery in human history. Experimental proof (I've heard tell that it has been proven.) of local indeterminacy is mind-boggling. Why every science writer worth his salt isn't jumping to come up with a better write up is beyond me. This book is a must read--even for real students of quantum mechanics.

good intention and useful, but disastrous C++ example code

I agree mostly with the other reviewers to say that this book is useful to some
extent for its brief review of molecular simulation and more so for the chapter
on object oriented programing.
However, I am really annoyed by the bad job done on the actual C++ example
code. While the class structure done in UML seems OK, the actual code is of a
very bad style and very misleading. I object to the fact that the code is still far
too procedural and encapsulation and information hiding have not really been
used at all. I found this really misleading, since I wanted to use the code and adapt
it to my own needs. There are some pretty dodgy style conventions also, such as
the inclusion of header files in header files, inconsistent class structure.
Beginners beware and keep a proper C++ for scientists and engineers book
on the side.

Not the place to learn molecular simulation

The early chapters are really just a review of the available literature on the topic - a better place to start is the book by Frenkel and Smit. The redeeming feature is the interesting final chapter on object-oriented programming, though this won't interest everybody. For such an expensive book the typesetting and general layout is not as good as it could be.

A very useful book

This is a very useful book, particularly for researchers and graduate students. It explains many Monte Carlo and molecular simulation algorithms. Some are familiar but many are not described in detail elsewhere. The review of the literature is very comprehensive and up-to-date. A novel and unique feature is Chapter 10 which shows how to write simulation code using object-oriented analysis. Code is also given in C++. The book is expensive but it is worth every penny just for this chapter alone.

BEST FOR A SELECTIVE AUDIENCE

I see a composite of 1 star before this review. Who am I reviewing for? The person who wants spiritual inspiration or travel inspiration or a romance? The book offers all 3.

When I first picked it up , I was pretty bored by the beginning, but a friend had described the story, so I skipped past the beginning and, happily, found myself " in" Italy with the author. Later, after I was well into the story, I went back to fill in the beginning.

My love for the story was partly because of a connection I have to the practice of Siddha Yoga which is the spiritual practice described by the author, and the GuruGita, the chant which she describes, but never names. I knew some of the places described and because I could recognize them, even though they were given different names, I experienced the book as very authentic.

Also, I had experienced my own, analogous, spiritual odyssey in a different part of the world. That probably made the story all the more real and appealing for me.

There was romance , but I was not especially hooked by it.

As for travel inspiration, it didn't make me salivate to go to any of the places described; but, now that I am remembering it, my mouth begins to water, both for Italian and Indonesian food.

The author isn't happy 100% of the time, and if that's bothers you, don't read

I loved this book because I got a lot out of it. A lot of critical reviews complain that Liz was self-indulgent, narcissistic, etc. While I did sense this throughout the novel, it wasn't deafening. I appreciated that she didn't shy away from sharing how miserable of a person she was being prior to leaving. I didn't take it as a pity party, but rather an honest portrayal. I know that many readers were enraged that she could be on these fabulous all-expenses-paid getaways but still be upset and crying and etc., but that's what depression and severe life changes (a really terrible divorce) do to you. I know plenty of people who have fared worse and dealt better which may make some readers want to slap Liz across the face. She wanted to slap herself across face because she recognized how much of a hungry whimpering animal she was being. But I appreciate that she managed to pull herself out of the dumps and became a better person at the end of it all.

Life-changing

Liz Gilbert bares her soul in this book and shows us that there will always be difficulties in life, you will make mistakes and you have to learn to live with them without beating yourself up. Her whimsical manner of writing gives it a more familiar feel to all of this which makes it easier to sink in. I very much enjoyed this book and every character reminded me of someone in my life, especially a very close friend of mine. If you need a book that will teach you to just let go this is the best book I can recommend.
