The Bridegroom Was a Dog begins with a schoolteacher telling a fable to her students. In the fable, a princess promises her hand in marriage to a dog that has licked her bottom clean. The story takes an even stranger twist when that very dog appears to the schoolteacher in real life as a dog-like man. They develop a very sexual, romantic courtship with many allegorical overtones ― much to the chagrin of her friends.

About the Author
Yoko Tawada―“strange, exquisite” (The New Yorker )―was born in Tokyo in 1960 and moved to Germany when she was twenty-two. She writes in both Japanese and German and has received the Akutagawa Prize, the Adelbert von Chamisso Prize, the Goethe Medal, and the Tanizaki Prize.
Margaret Mitsutani has also translated Japan’s 1994 Nobel Prize laureate Kenzaburo Oe.

It was a good read

I had to read it for school so that automatically knocks down the enjoyment for me. But I'd be a fool if I let that actually get in the way of recognizing a good book. The story's nonlinear section do take a little getting used to, but it is woven together so well that it shouldn't poss a problem for most. Along with that the characters and story provide to be interesting. And this is probably a story I'd pick up on my own if school didn't prompt me.

Nothing is Quite What It Seems in These Stories

This surreal book of 3 short stories is not for everyone. The first story of the eponymous title won author Yoko Tawada the Akutagawa Prize. It is an odd story about a cram school teacher who finds love from the attentions of a man who has taken on the behaviors of a dog. In the second story, 'Missing Heels', a woman lives in a truly weird world with her unnamed husband, and encounters a variety of oddly intended people, including a doctor who wants to perform plastic surgery on her feet.
These tales are not for those expecting a rational story in a recognizable world. Rather, they force you to push your expectations and assumptions. The reward from reading these surreal stories is the ability to take a novel view of the world around you.
