Very interesting and thorough

It is not only a how-to book, but one on the history and meanings of Sashiko and it's many designs. Her instructions are clear and concise, with several projects meant to increase your skill.

Not for beginners

I'm new to sashiko, and this book didn't offer much help. It has lots of designs and nice photographs, but the nitty gritty details (how to start/stop stitching, which needle to use, etc) were missing. When the author did offer specifics, she assumed the reader already knew the steps (she said to tie a square knot then a half hitch knot but didn't describe how). The author emphasized continuous machine stitching, yet most of the designs featured parallel lines. Doesn't that mean a lot of starting and stopping? The projects were attractive, but there were few step-by-step illustrations for how to make them.

In short, if you're an experienced sewist, you'll probably get more out of this book than I did. If you're a beginner, you might enjoy reading about the history of sashiko and seeing the beautiful designs, but you won't feel ready to start sewing them.

About the Author
Earl R. Babbie graduated from Harvard University before enlisting in the U.S. Marine Corps. He received his Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley, and began teaching shortly thereafter. A great replacement for Ambien!

Need a sleeping pill but can't get that perscription? Well, this is a great alternative. By far the worst book I have ever had the misfortune of reading. He will never get to the point and even has the audacity to site himself and his research several times throughout the book. What an terrible author!

Check ISBN carefully!

I was sent some knock-off, copied version of the real book. The content was relatively similar, but not what I had intended to purchase. Make sure you check the ISBN as this is where I might have gone wrong (I never checked it). Stupid quantitative research methods...I hated that class.

With this volume, author and sociologist Sennett (The Culture of the New Capitalism) launches a three-book examination of "material culture," asking "what the process of making concrete things reveals to us about ourselves." Taking in everything from Pandora and Hephaestus to Linux programmers, Sennett posits that the spirit of craftsmanship-an "enduring, basic human impulse, the desire to do a job well for its own sake"-is tragically lacking in many areas of the industrialized world. Craftsmanship, by combining skill, commitment and judgment, establishes a close relationship between head and hand, man and machine, that Sennett asserts is vital to physical, mental and societal well-being; the symptoms of craftsmanship-deficiency can be found in worker demoralization, inefficiency and waning loyalty from both employees and employers, as well as other (largely institutional) effects. Sennett looks at the evolution of craftsmanship and the historical forces which have stultified it, how it's learned in the areas it still thrives (among scientists, artists, cooks, computer programmers and others), and issues of quality and ability (skill, not talent, makes a craftsman). Sennett considers an array of artisans across different periods, from ancient Chinese chefs to contemporary mobile-phone designers, in this powerful meditation on the "skill of making things well." The template of craftsmanship, he finds, combines a "material consciousness" with a willingness to put in years of practice (a common estimate of the time required to master a craft is ten thousand hours) and a strategic acceptance of ambiguity, rather than an obsessive perfectionism. Sennett’s aim is to make us rethink the notion that society benefits most from a workforce trained to respond to the metamorphoses of a global economy. Ultimately, he writes, the difficulties and possibilities of craft can teach "techniques of experience" that help us relate to others, and lead to an "ethically satisfying" pride in one’s work.

A complex but very rewarding read about craftsmanship, pride ...

A complex but very rewarding read about craftsmanship, pride in one's work and the differences between individual work and mechanical production, and the intellectual investment in the former versus the more mechanistic approach in the latter.
Sennet uses many examples from the world of music to illustrate his thesis and he finishes with an explanation of the philosophical underpinnings of his ideas, pragmatism in this case.
This book has an extensive index and bibliography and his examples are well-chosen and illustrative and evidence of his wide understanding of the matter. Not a book to read on the beach or a plane or even at home in a week or so. It requires time and patience and is rewarding even when dipping into individual sections but the real benefit comes with the final section brings together the threads and leaves the (this) reader with much more understanding of this field of human endeavour than one had before.

An Important Re-framing of an Old Idea

Richard Sennett has been one of my most-preferred interpreters of physical and social culture since Flesh and Stone. He tackles issues that got trampled by misapplications of lit-crit and semiotic theory over the last few decades, and manages to get them back into the discussion. He has a rather dogged style: history, explication, and journalistic fairness are treated like responsibilities in language that is mostly quite dry, even bland. But what he lacks in vivacity, he more than covers with solid, methodical argumentation and a heartening tendency to broaden concepts and include the truly modern. In this volume, for example, Sennett adds Linux programming to the list of what we normally think of as craft, and I think he makes his case. Craft is a wicked thicket for us Moderns: we have not kept pace with its devaluation in an age of competitive production and disposable workers, and the quality of our handwork has suffered, but Sennett also convinces me that our comprehension of the world and the place of humans in it has suffered, because good craft is the meeting of mind and hand. What devalues handwork impoverishes the human mind. We lose our capacity for imagination.

I read this book very closely, pencil in hand, convinced that Sennett has contributed greatly to our understanding of what it means to be human in a machine age. I believe that his work has eclipsed Hannah Arendt's by now. Excellent.

A pinnacle in American organized crime history.

Gangland is the most thorough and professional telling of the fall of John Gotti. I was already familiar with the characters from other books, primarily "Boss of Bosses," so I was very pleased to wrap up the story as told by this highly skilled author and journalist.
The biggest difference between this and other mafia books is that almost all other books are written as first person accounts by the participants (i.e. FBI agents, mobsters, etc.). As an unbiased observer, Blum can tell the entire story in all of its fascinating detail - from FBI squad rooms to the inner circle of Gotti's most private mob retreats. This professional detachment does not in any way hamper the personal details of the story. Blum can still make you feel like an insider. Probably the best example of this is when he recounts Gotti and Sammy "the Bull" Gravano's murder of Gambino crime family boss Paul Castellano. When you read the story again later in the book - as part of Gravano's confession - it brings chills down your back yet again. You can sense the excitement of the government agents and prosecutors who are hearing the story for the first time. It is a true pinnacle in American organized crime history.
Gangland is a required companion to other fine mafia books like "Donnie Brasco," "Boss of Bosses," and to a lesser extent "Underboss." The only thing to remember is that its journalistic approach is markedly different from the "I was there" approach of other books. Just stick with it as everything unravels perfectly in the end.

Classic story of the dedication to break the mob.

This book has everything in it about the most colorful character the mob has had since Al Capone (which wasn't necessarily a good thing). It is a very detailed account of not just Gotti's world but the world of the FBI who was trying to bring him down, from dealing with lawyers, to wiretaps in homes, to wiretapping cars on the street, to dealing with members of the mob themselves (as when the FBI heard a hit order was put out on a couple agents, how SAIC Mowe went to Gotti's front door to confront him personally), etc. If there is a drawback to this book, it is that some of the FBI details were a little long winded, and at some points seemed to slow the book down. But better to err on the side of details than to leave a reader asking questions, which there weren't that many after reading this book. On a sidebar note, it gives the reader an idea of how the cards are usually stacked against the good guys and the obstacles that they have to overcome to get the bad guys.

Accurate and fascinating, if a little biased

More than an account of the rise and fall of one of the most charismatic Godfathers of all time, this is an intriguing insight into the artistry and complexity of surveillance and inter-departmental politics. It is the fascinating and accurate account of the slog, it can only be called, of Bruce Mouw and his FBI organized crime team over the years it took to finally bring the Teflon Don to justice.
One could argue that the book is shamelessly biassed in favor of the FBI. The often competing fellow law enforcement agencies are often depicted with almost the same scorn as the gangsters themselves. One could also argue that the noble crusade to convict a notorious felon was really more like a foot race for bragging rights to his head. The book does not completely discard this notion but does appear to justify the FBI's behavior while criticizing that of the Organized Crime task force and the Police Department when essentially the motivation was the same.
However, the book rightfully avoids glamorizing the criminals, and offers a fascinating account of the technology, logistics and economics of wire-tapping, surveillance and snitch recruitment. It is excellently written, detailed, yet economical, and meshes dramatic techniques with never-wavering factual accuracy seamlessly. One of the better true crime books written.

Informative Beginner's Guide

I'm becoming more aware of my energy field and how to take care of my psychic self, so to speak. This is exactly as described: a brief, fundamental introduction to balancing your chakras. It is 69 pages long and touches base on all 7 chakras and their function. Each chapter has a description of how you will feel balanced and how you will feel when imbalanced; balancing exercises for each individual chakra; questions to ask yourself what factors connect with chakra function/malfunction; and a brief list of physical and emotional symptoms connected to each. Also short guides at the end for crystal healing and aromatherapy.

I was recently assessed for free at a holistic expo and told I have a Solar Plexus blockage. I felt that I could trust the woman who told me, and I cross-referenced physical & emotional symptoms. The description fit my issues to a T. I got this book and was recently able to take a moment and do a crystal exercise; I felt much better for the rest of the day. A Beginner's Guide to the Chakras is a fantastic starter book for those who are new to awareness of energy, even those skeptics. It's informative and to the point, without confusing spiritual lingo. I'm learning quite a bit and I highly recommend it.

I'm new to learning about the chakra's and I've found it extremely helpful. It's a small but very helpful starter book. Now comes a real-life account of the mob by one of its former leading denizens: Underboss, the story of Sammy "the Bull" Gravano, as told by Peter Maas. Gravano spent his entire life in the mob, his loyalty unswerving until the moment he realized crime boss John Gotti was about to sell him down the river in order to save his own neck. Gravano might not be well-educated and he's certainly not glamorous, but he's a vivid storyteller. What he has to say is horrifying in its matter-of-factness. Car thief, extortionist, intimidator, and murderer, Gravano was also a dedicated family man who preferred to spend evenings home with his wife and kids. Above all, he never lost sight of who and what he was: "I don't think I'm Robin Hood. I think I'm a gangster." Maas (The Valachi Papers, LJ 6/1/69) and Sammy "The Bull" Gravano team up to write a somewhat informative book on the Cosa Nostra of New York from the 1970s through the early 1990s. Maas narrates Gravano's life story while quoting directly from his subject. One early quote sets the book's premise when Sammy says, "I wouldn't have minded going to Vietnam. You got medals for killing people there." Through the many descriptions of Sammy's involvement in the Mafia as a hitman and leading up to his appointment as underboss to John Gotti of the Gambino crime family, the reader gets a real sense of a street thug. We learn that Gotti and Gravano masterminded and carried out the murder of Paul Castellano, then boss of the crime family, outside of Sparks Steak House in New York City. Eventually, after both were indicted on murder and racketeering charges, Sammy opted to "rat" on Gotti and served only five years. As a depiction of life in the Cosa Nostra from a man who brought down perhaps the most famous mob figure since Al Capone, this book is recommended for libraries looking to expand their organized crime collections. Gravano--Sammy the Bull to his Cosa Nostra cohorts--is the highest ranking member of the Mob ever to defect. By turning state's witness against his friend and head of the Gambino family, John Gotti, Gravano was allowed to serve only five years in prison for 19 murders and won the dubious distinction of having to watch his back for the rest of his life. He also hooked up with Maas, author of The Valachi Papers, spent hours talking to him, and revealed a world that readers will be both fascinated and repelled by. As a child, Gravano lived across the street from a saloon, a Mafia hangout in Bensonhurst. Labeled a "slow learner," he found the mobsters to be the one group that didn't put him down, and before long, he was in the gangster life. Gravano speaks matter-of-factly of his escalating Mafia career, which eventually involved becoming a hit man, but oddly, what emotion does come across is that of love, love for the Cosa Nostra and its traditions. Coming after all the murders and mayhem, Gravano's decision to rat on Gotti, mostly for his flamboyance of all things, is almost anticlimactic. Maas writes this page-turner in Gravano's voice, and it's a voice that readers will hear in their heads for a long while. Ilene Cooper

Great stories and details of inner working of mob life.

This is a good book not only telling the story of Sammy the Bull Gravano, but it also goes into detail of the different ways the mafia made money. I found that fascinating. Going into detail what points meant (a vig), different schemes like trunking and what he called lumping in the construction business. Or how they would rob drug dealers $200,000 and pay tipsters off $10,000 send some money up the ladder and pocket the rest. Or stories of shylocking and how made members would borrow money at 1-1.5 points then turn around and lend at 2-3 points. I found those details very facinating. It was also interesting to hear stories of the inner structure of the mob and how the hierarchy worked.

This is definitely a a good read if you like the history of the mob. It may bother you if you think that this book is glorifying criminal activity. Objectively speaking I am ok with it because it is the story of Americana history told from first hand point of view that we would never have access to. Its an very interesting read.

I Enjoyed It

I was close to not even buying this book when I was reading these reviews saying it was slow and boring and exactly the same as John Gotti's book except harder to stay interested in, but I ended up buying it anyway. I'm glad I did. I really enjoyed it. I'm currently now reading The Valachi Papers by the same author and I'm finding this book harder to stay on track and understand. I wish it was more like Underboss. But they are two different stories, and maybe the time era has some effect. Anyways, I liked Underboss a lot. It made me really like Sammy Gravano and really dislike John Gotti actually. I wondered if I would have read John Gotti's book if I would have felt the opposite.

Fascinating study.

Very interesting account of life in the Mafia of the 70's and 80's. Peter Maas has done the seemingly impossible and pieced together all the information gathered over years and years of investigation, wire-taps, testimonials, statements etc etc and carved out a timeline showing Gravano's evolution into, and then out of, the Mafia. Maas' writing style is easy to follow as he relates chronologically a fascinating story about a world that resides only in the shadows. The main voice in the book is that of Sammy Gravano who, by force of character alone, rose to the dizzy heights of John Gotti's underboss. The title Underboss seems to mean that Sammy gets to do everything concerned with running a multi-million dollar operation and Gotti gets to reap all the rewards.

If anything the reader might get lost in all the names banded about in the book along with the ever switching allegiences. Nevertheless, it's a fascinating story that will hold your interest.

The ability to be humorous correlates to increased personal well-being, social interaction and health. Nature favors funny people, and funny people benefit immensely from this one, personal trait.
Witty people gain social chops just by virtue of being funny. Few people fail to enjoy time spent laughing with good company. However, natural wit bestows upon one more than the mere ability to evoke laughter. Persons who possess wit and a healthy dose of intuition are able to gauge the moods of their audience by measuring the reception of their various jokes, barbs and tall tales.1 Armed with this perception, the witty guy or gal can purposefully alienate or endear others by directing the tone of their humor.1 Masterfully funny people can employ wit in ways that cause others to flit to them and like them. Specifically, one’s wit is used as a tool to expose and identify others in the environment that shares similar dispositions and propensities. In romantic scenarios, fine-tuned wit can equate to “getting” the girl or guy. In fact, various studies show that male wit or humor often sparks romantic interest in the female kind. It's witty

This is a very neat book, I was smitten with it. The author, Clayton Geoffreys makes his case by listing 7 Reasons Why Being Witty Can Elevate Conversation Skills. Wit is Appreciated and Provokes Laughter, Shared Wit Solidifies Relationships, Wit Promotes Open-Mindedness, Wit Promotes Critical Thinking, Wit Fuels Creativity, and Wit Tempers Hostility.

You get the gist of his argument? Wit is something for smart people, who look even smarter when they share their wittiness. But there is more,
“… As stated earlier, laughter promotes myriad health benefits, and it has the added advantage of endearing persons to the source of all this laughter, the witty person(s) themselves. Consequently, witty people are sought after because the benefits of being in their company are immense.”

The author lists two case studies, “Groucho Marx” and “Robin Williams”, and while I would not necessarily call his writings case studies, I believe that he provides two very neat short biographies, which describe how the named comedians got to make their mark in history.

Since truly funny people have to keep a lot in mind, e.g. for which audience to make which joke so it will be welcome Clayton Geoffreys explains how to train to become this witty person. In particular I appreciated that Clayton states that people should read the dictionary. That includes the slang dictionary, like he so vividly illustrates with the well chosen example of a TV reporter, who suggested that people would even beaver, if they could. That goes to show that this book is even a witty.

How to be witty is an exceptional read that is great for anyone who enjoys social interaction.

Wit is a personality trait that is valued and always welcomed in today’s society. How to be witty is informational and contains plenty of useful strategies to improve your witty skills. After reading this book I am looking forward to seeing how the new tips improve my social skills and comments. The author took the time to explain all aspects of wit along with the helpful tips on how to improve your own wit. Being witty takes years of practice and trials of what works and doesn’t work. As the book mentions timing is everything when trying to be successfully witty in a social environment. Multiple times in the past I have thought of the best comment ever, but a few seconds too late so it was useless. Thank you for the fun read that was extremely helpful and intriguing.

What a fun filled and clever book. The author had me totally delighted and chuckling to myself the entire time I was reading. I was a bit skeptical about his methods, but none the less, I figured at worst I would be entertained and get a good laugh. I must say that I was pleasantly surprised. The book is filled with a lot of great practical information that really gives a ton of insight, as well as techniques, to communicate more effectively through the use of humor and dialogue strategy. Not only can it help break the ice with someone you want to date, but also can make daily interactions with people and in business so much more pleasant, meaningful, and effective. I can't say enough good things about this book. 5 big stars!

Good textbook

This seems to be a good textbook. I like the various exhibits, charts and extraneous materials on the law - makes it more interesting. However, there are quite a few typos in the text and I did find errors in the answers to the quick quiz at the end of each section. I don't know who proofread the text for this book, but I do find quite a lot of spelling errors in McGraw-Hill textbooks (besides this one) which surprises me a great deal.

HAPPY WITH THE CONDITION OF BOOK

Although i bought this book used, the condition is better than I thought. I was a little annoyed that it arrived a day late, but I am thankful it arrived. The price was unbelievably reasonable and fit my budget. The price beat the school store and would definitely recommend getting this exact purchase.
